JOB SUMMARY

Assist nurses with patient care to include, but not limited to taking vitals, perform EKGs, starting IVs, collecting specimens, and other duties within their scope of practice. Will keep patients informed of delays and approximate wait times to be seen by Provider. During the wait time, will round with patients to assess needs and communicate any changes in condition to the nurse for further reassessment. Supervised by the Emergency Room Director.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Provides supportive care to the Emergency Department patients under the direct supervision of the Registered Nurse or physician. Performs approved procedures per policy.

Maintains patient comfort and safety while waiting to be treated.

Escorts patients to restrooms when appropriate and collects specimens as needed.

Takes vital signs on patients. Performs EKGs and starts IVs when requested by registered nurse or physician.

Prioritizes work and provides prompt and efficient service.

Documents patient care performed, including vital signs, patient care and observations.

Communicates clearly and appropriately with health care staff, patients and families

Keeps patients and family members informed of wait times

Rounds with patients frequently and responds promptly to patient and visitor inquiries and requests.

Communicates frequently with triage and charge nurse to improve patient flow.

Assists with cleaning rooms after patient discharge as needed.

Stocks supplies in rooms and throughout unit.

Assist with some clerical duties as assigned.

Performs and assists with technical tasks within scope of practice as directed.

Minimum Education

High school graduate or equivalent.

EMT-I or EMT-P certification, Certified Nurses’ Assistant (CNA), or Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) with a minimum of one year of experience preferred.

Current basic life support (BLS) for healthcare providers certification required on hire.

Able to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing. Additional languages preferred.

Intermediate computer knowledge required.

Functional Job Requirements:

Job requirements include, but are not limited to: sitting, standing, walking, kneeling, bending, squatting and reaching. Requires good finger dexterity, repetitive motions with hands and fingers. Requires ability to have good vision and hearing. Pushing and pulling equipment may be necessary.

Job requires medium lifting on an occasional basis.
