Job Title: Roadway Maintenance Mechanic

Reports To: Roadmaster and Track Foreman

Type of position: Non-Exempt /Hourly

Employee Classification: Regular

Location: Dillsboro, NC (various locations along GSMR track line)

Compensation: $22-25 per DOE and qualifications

Job Summary: The Roadway Maintenance Mechanic will perform tasks throughout the day that will entail general maintenance on equipment, emergency fieldwork on equipment, keep an ongoing inventory of parts, hoses, and other consumables needed for equipment, schedule and work with supervision to service equipment. When not working on equipment the employee will be required to be with the crew in a hi-rail truck to perform on-the-spot repairs, if they can be made safely on the track. It is also required that the employee help with the daily track work as needed.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Track repairs and construction.
  • Bridge repairs and construction.
  • Operation of as well as repairs, maintenance, and inspections of spiker, tamper, tie crane, tie inserter, brush cutter, boom trucks, dump trucks, hi-rail trucks, ballast regulator, backhoe, track hoe, and air compressor with air tools.
  • Ability to operate and use rail related handheld power tools such as chain saws, pole saws, rail saws, spikers, and rail drills.
  • Performs preventative maintenance on all department highway vehicles & track equipment and keeps records of such.
  • Operates company vehicles that require a standard driver’s license or a CDL in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Strict compliance to GSMR procedures/rules, roadway worker safety program and operating rules.
  • Will be required to work with track crew when not working on equipment.
  • Works as needed and performs all other duties as assigned.
Requirements:

Education, Skill and Work Experience Requirements:

  • Must have valid CDL.
  • 5 + years of experience required.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively in both written and spoken English.
  • Must be able to interact effectively with coworkers, contractors, and vendor partners.
  • Ability to work closely with others and be able to comprehend and carry out complex tasks.
  • Experience with operation and repair of hand and power tools as well as tractors and heavy equipment.
  • Experience with routine servicing and maintenance of off and on-road vehicles and equipment.
  • Must have experience in/knowledge of electric over hydraulic systems, diesel engines, Harsco equipment, Pandrol Jackson equipment, and Kershaw equipment.
  • Must be familiar with parts of equipment and part numbers to ensure ordering accuracy.
  • Proficient in all railroad maintenance equipment.
  • Experience with working safely with crew members as a team.
  • Must be available for duty: weekends, nights, and off-hours in the event of track emergencies and/or special or emergency inspections.
  • Ability to perform continuous heavy labor in all weather conditions.
  • Must successfully complete Work Steps evaluation.
