About our Opportunity

The City of Asheville is seeking qualified applicants for full time, time-limited & non-exempt
Worker positions. This Parks and Recreation Maintenance Worker position performs routine
grounds, building maintenance and custodial functions for the Parks and Recreation Department.

This position serves as a laborer on one of our Parks Asset Management crews. All worker
positions can expect to perform a variety of duties including but not limited to grounds and facility maintenance, upkeep, and cleaning.

This FT position is time-limited with benefits. The individuals hired into this position would be
expected to work at least a 9-month period.

Typical Work Hours: Friday - Monday from 12:00 PM - 10:30 PM
Work Schedule: 40 hours per week

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Operates power an assortment of tools, hand and power, used in landscaping and mowing activities.
  • Operates lawn mowers and string trimmers to cut and trim fields and other grassed areas; pulls weeds from flower beds and other landscaped areas; and may drag athletic fields,apply lime to mark boundaries as well as spraying herbicides and pesticides.
  • Picks up debris and refuses and performs routine custodial services including cleaning park restrooms.
  • Loads and unloads material on and off of trucks.
  • Maintains activity logs.
  • Provides weather related maintenance.
  • Performs routine preventive maintenance on equipment and fuels vehicles. Inspects equipment daily and reports need for repairs and assists in repair work.
  • Responsible for unlocking and locking park facilities and equipment
  • Position signs, marking cones and flags to identify work areas.
  • Provides event support setting up tables, chairs and/or tents.
  • Performs other similar duties as required.

Education & Experience

  • High school diploma or GED/equivalent preferred, but not required.
  • Valid driver's license preferred.
  • Experience in operating trucks/vehicles towing or pulling trailers carrying various equipment and tools such as mowers, weedeaters, edgers and other landscape tools.

Applicants with equivalent education and/or experience may be considered

  • Ability to read and understand written instructions, to understand simple processes and the routine operation of machines and/or that ability to learn to operate mowers, weedeaters, edgers and other tools used in ground maintenance/ landscaping.
  • Ability to operate a City truck/vehicle which may pull trailers carrying various equipment and tools such as mowers, weedeaters, edgers and other landscape tools.
  • Ability and willingness to perform a variety of duties from mowing and landscaping to trash removal and cleaning of facilities/restrooms as needed.
  • Capable of working outside in all types of weather for prolonged periods of time and in unpleasant conditions.
  • Skilled in providing excellent customer service.
  • Ability to stand, walk and bend for long periods of time.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs repeatedly; may provide event support including setting up tables, chairs, tents and electrical boxes as well as lifting equipment into vehicles.
  • Basic knowledge of record keeping and daily activity logs.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in writing and verbally.
  • Suited to working independently and with limited supervision.
  • Knowledgeable in the use of basic hand tools and small power tools.
