Job Title: ESOL Teachers (Part time and full time .5 FTE/1.0 FTE) - Portland Adult Education
Position Type: ADULT EDUCATION/Adult Ed Teacher (Full and Part-Time) (PEA)
Salary Range for Full Time: $49,382-$62,938
Term of employment: 12/01/22-06/30/24. These are grant funded positions with funding anticipated through June 30, 2024. Position continuation dependent on additional grant funding.
Overview: This is an exciting time to join the teaching staff of Portland Adult Education, the largest school for adults in Maine. We serve approximately 2,000 students annually in our Academic and Workforce programs (ESOL, High School Diploma, College Transitions, and Workforce preparation) and offer both in-person and remote classes. Job Description: We seek energetic, knowledgeable, flexible, team-oriented, highly-skilled teachers of English to adult Multilingual Learners. Successful candidates will provide rigorous instruction designed to improve students’ speaking, listening, reading, and writing in English; plan effective lessons and assess student learning; maintain high expectations while providing support for students who are struggling; and collaborate with other teachers in the ESOL department and across PAE.
Full-time position with a remote instruction emphasis (1.0 FTE): This position requires teaching three ESOL classes per term at PAE with at least one being remote (online). The role requires expertise in remote instruction and the capacity to serve as a coach and resource for remote teachers at PAE, including providing training on methods of remote instruction and instructional materials/how-to guides.
Part-time position with a healthcare emphasis (.5 FTE): This position requires teaching two low to mid-level ESOL classes that incorporate introductory healthcare content. The courses could be in-person or remote. The teacher will collaborate with colleagues and lead the design and integration of healthcare curriculum into their classes.
Other responsibilities include:
Offering support and leadership to the ESOL Department such as providing input on the ESOL curriculum or helping to support or mentor teachers at particular ESOL levels
Actively participating in monthly ESOL Department meetings and ESOL Level meetings and/or serving as an ESOL Level Leader
Additional duties as assigned
Required Skills/Qualifications:
Minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in a related fieldExcellent teaching skills, particularly for multilingual learners
Strong interpersonal skills in order to collaborate effectively with other teachers
Experience teaching remotely (for the full-time position)
Interest in and/or experience teaching adults; the ability to be flexible and independent in learning to teach new content
Preferred:
At least three years of ESOL teaching experienceExperience and interest in helping to build students’ digital literacy in the ESOL classroom, particularly with various ESOL levels
Some teacher-training or instructional coaching experience
Location and Work Schedule:
PAE offers both in person and remote classes. In person classes take place at 14 Locust St, Portland, ME
Class schedules vary - morning, afternoon and evening session available
