About This Role:

Manages, plans, organizes and evaluates functions including but not limited to chemistry laboratory technical and operations, supervisory review, monitoring and compliance with operating expenses, participation in system maintenance, validation, performance verification, upgradation, customer service, inventory, ensuring safe working environment and or other related tasks. Supervise testing personnel, monitors and ensures that acceptable performance specifications are maintained, including quality control review, scheduled instrument/equipment maintenance and other quality assurance activities as assigned.

Activities:

  • Ensures test system performance by initiating preventive and/or remedial actions when test procedures deviate from the laboratory's established performance specification, In the event of nonconformances, ensures that test results are not reported until corrective action has been taken and test is performing according to laboratory established performance specifications
  • Verify that personnel are trained and deemed proficient prior to performing testing on patient specimens independently, Ensures that staff have competency assessments and continuing education as needed and action is taken when personnel do not perform as expected on competency assessments
  • Communicates including bringing problems and nonconformities to the attention of laboratory management, Have excellent leadership and problem-solving capabilities, manage personnel and allocation of assets for effective laboratory operations
  • Review of applicable test results daily and or in his/her next duty period. Reviews quality control, calibration and maintenance at least monthly or if frequently required, ensures documentation and maintain records to reflect review. Does bench work as needed, follows laboratory's pre-analytic and analytic procedures and maintaining records of tests. Follows standard precautions, laboratory safety/infection control protocols, use appropriate PPE, decontaminate bench surfaces and or other equipment and does proper documentation as appropriate
  • Manages proficiency testing and maintaining records that demonstrate that proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient specimens, introduced in routine workflow, rotated amongst staff and data is properly reviewed/entered, submitted and evaluation report monitored. Adheres to laboratory's quality assurance procedures, including documenting all quality control activities, instrument and equipment verifications, maintenance and preventive maintenance
  • Follows lab policies and procedures whenever test systems are not within laboratory's established performance specifications. Identifying and documenting problems that may adversely affect test performance and notify assistant director(s) or director; and documenting all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from lab established performance specifications
  • Complies with laboratory SOP(s), patient safety/privacy and HIPAA rule, maintains environment of care standards, work on laboratory goals to prioritize safety/care of patients and respond to inquiries courteously, accurately and in a timely manner
  • Promote safe, cooperative and professional health care environment for optimum patient care, best laboratory practices, adheres to policies, procedures, rules/regulations and demonstrates standards of performance and behaviors consistent
  • Coordinates department staffing and scheduling to ensure adequate shift and skill coverage and maintains laboratory and compliance records. Ensures adequate operating supplies, appropriate inventory management, specimen handling and management including all pre-analytical processing, recording and tracking of specimens. Ensures Shift to shift communication to the staff and supervisors about pending tasks, ongoing compliance and laboratory tasks that needs to be accomplished in a timely manner to avoid safety and patient care issues for efficient laboratory operations. Assist in staff hires, training, and performance appraisals, ensures performance appraisals are completed in a timely manner and assumes responsibilities in other areas of the laboratory as and when required
  • Actively participate in performance improvement process of department/institution and interacts with regulatory and accreditation agencies. Develops, implements, and evaluates approved operations and procedures to achieve department/service line strategic goals and knowledgeable about policies/procedures’ contents (including changes) relevant to scope of laboratory services

About You:

Education: Bachelor's degree in a chemical, physical, biological or clinical laboratory science or medical technology program, at a minimum, NY Clinical Laboratory Technologist License issued by New York State Education Department

Experience: 6 years of experience as clinical laboratory technologist or 4 years with a master degree qualifying as a NYSDOH Supervisor
