Position Description—Workplace Literacy Instructor

Part-time English instructor for businesses, 10 hours per week with possibility for additional hours. Approximately 5 hours of weekly active teaching time. Curriculum planning and travel time is paid.

Pay Rate: $30/hour

Qualifications:

· High School Diploma required. Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in education, Spanish, communication, or related field preferred. TESOL certification preferred. Experience taken into consideration if education preference is not met.

· Read, write, and speak English well. Experience in Spanish is helpful.

· Must be willing to undergo a Wisconsin State Criminal Record Background Check.

· Must possess patience, an acceptance of cultural diversity, and a desire to help adult learners.

· Experience designing and implementing curriculum in teaching English to adults and willing to adapt lessons to virtual, if needed.

· Ability to commit to weekly classes in different locations and able to drive to teach class in Cedar Grove/Belgium, Plymouth, Kiel, Sheboygan, or elsewhere in Sheboygan County.

· Must be able to adapt to different working environments. You might be teaching in a dairy farm office, a staff breakroom, or a conference room.

Initial Process to Onboard Company/Client:

· Conduct an initial meeting with Literacy Council, business company managers and/or supervisors—discuss needs and goals of business and students.

· Follow up with a shadow of employee in need of English lessons. Observe things that may not be immediately apparent such as loudspeaker announcements, signage, and/or forms.

· If applicable, shadow current instructor at on-site classes. Observe and make note of student goal and potential future lessons.

Develop a comprehensive plan:

· Create a curriculum that is responsive to the needs and goals that students have. Use resources such as English Forward series, Ventures, and “Breaking News English” to offer dynamic instruction and homework.

· Establish the evaluations of the program focused on not intimidating students but still providing data to show progress

· Develop an understanding of high priority communication, phrases, and vocabulary for industry.

· Use engaging teaching techniques, including but not limited to:

o Responses using real objects and real job situations

o Role-play dialogues between employee and supervisors or colleagues (can even include factory noise in background to simulate real situations).

· Collaborate with supervisors for in-class participation, input, and feedback.

· Maintain a confidential file on student progress including dates, student goals (set and met), observed changes in student attitude or performance, etc.

Pay: $30.00 per hour
