Job Summary

Under the leadership of Cal Poly's ninth president, Dr. Jeffrey D. Armstrong, Cal Poly is committed to adopting a comprehensive strategic framework for advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion centrally and within all divisions, auxiliaries, colleges and units in a sustainable way. That framework will promote the university's mission and values and transform the university's culture to be a more welcoming and inclusive one for all. This role is an opportunity for a strategic leader to make a large impact alongside a university community eager to continue in its growth and education for how best to support its student body, faculty, and staff, while continuing to diversify campus, the broader San Luis Obispo area, and Central Coast region in these efforts. The next VP will work closely with the university community to address the following:

Create a unified vision and strategy in alignment with the campus strategic plan
Foster and nurture a university-wide diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) network and ever- growing culture of open dialogue, education, and community building across the university community
Establish measurable, mutually developed benchmarks, within and beyond action plans, to set and implement priorities
Partner with the university community on the recruitment, support, and retention of diverse students, faculty, and staff to reflect the diversity of California
Expand community and external engagement to establish Cal Poly as a valued leader and partner for inclusive excellence locally, regionally, within the CSU system, and beyond.
Division Summary

University Diversity, Equity and Inclusion leads efforts to build diversity and promote inclusion through a collective impact framework that connects partners and aligns university-wide efforts to achieve inclusive excellence, attract and respond to a diverse campus community, and nurture a respectful and inclusive campus climate. Cal Poly aims to ensure all graduates leave Cal Poly more prepared to tackle future challenges and have the competencies needed to live and work in a diverse and global society. The University Diversity, Equity and Inclusion team works to increase awareness of our values in support of diversity, equity and inclusion by communicating consistently and in multiple ways about our immediate and longer-term actions and initiatives. This team also takes a leadership role in a variety of projects and programs at Cal Poly, including the Believe, Educate & Empower, Advocate, Collaborative, Nurture (BEACoN) Mentors program, the Collective Impact process, several diversity and inclusion trainings, and the President's Diversity Awards.

Key Qualifications

Knowledge and demonstrated expertise in diversity, equity, and inclusion scholarship, best practices, and policies
Demonstrated executive leadership skills including visionary leadership, strategic thinking, and an innovative spirit
Ability to work effectively and build strong alliances internally and externally with a broad range of individuals to bring the university together around shared goals
Excellent oral and written skills, as well as advocacy skills and the ability to listen and understand the concerns of various groups, while balancing the interests of the university community
Familiarity with public higher education shared governance, including an understanding of how faculty senate, administrative leadership, student government, and other faculty, staff, student, and community groups interface with one another
Education and Experience

Doctoral or other terminal degree with a minimum of 10 years of experience leading diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives in a higher education environment

This position may be "Designated" under California State University's Conflict of Interest Code. This would require the filing of a Statement of Economic Interest on an annual basis and the completion of training within 6 months of assuming office and every 2 years thereafter.
