Piedmont Equine Associates is located on 26 picturesque acres just off Highway 441 in Madison, Georgia. We have a wide variety of turnout options, small and large paddocks, for our long term patients that do not require hospitalization. The clinic features a laboratory, pharmacy, reproduction lab, standing surgery/exam room, surgery suite, and 14 spacious indoor stalls for our more intensive patients.

The primary purpose of our Veterinary Student Externship is to provide a hands-on learning experience for 1st through 4th year students enrolled in Doctor of Veterinary Medicine program. The program is flexible and can be scheduled in 1- to 4-week blocks, depending on the extern’s and practice’s availabilities, with a limited amount of externship availability. Our practice offers a comprehensive program that allows externs to assist with hospital, outpatient, and ambulatory services. Our veterinarians are committed to a top-tier, advanced experience in the equine veterinary field. The goal of the externship program is to provide exposure to and experience with a variety of cases including preventive care, surgical procedures, anesthesia, internal medicine, intensive case management, dentistry, and reproduction (if the externship is completed during the Spring). We feel that the students who possess an open mind and a willingness to learn will benefit the most from our externship with the possible opportunity to practice procedures with recipient mares owned by the clinic.
The
Veterinary Student Extern is assigned to a doctor each day. Daily duties will include assisting veterinarians during hospital treatments, preparing ambulatory units for call schedules, assisting veterinarians in completion of exams, diagnostic imaging, lab work, and surgical and reproduction procedures. Externs will assist with in-patient care daily including weekends. Senior veterinary students are required to participate with weekend/afterhours activities; however, the opportunity is also provided to under classmen.
