Overview

Employees are responsible for the entire function of their work assignment. The responsibility includes but is not limited to the repair/maintenance of equipment, environment guidelines, and the safety and health of employees in their immediate area. This position helps us ensure the highest quality repair and maintenance services for our customers. The role of the Mechanic is to perform repairs and maintenance on heavy-duty tractors and trailers in a fast-paced environment while following DOT regulations and guidelines.

Requirements

  • Education: High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Experience: Minimum 2 years of experience required.
  • Licenses: Valid Driver’s License required, Class A CDL preferred.
  • Tools: Required to own/bring your own tools to the shop.
  • Must possess the proper certifications or work history for performing mechanical and electrical work on over-the-road tractors and trailers.
  • Basic reading and math skills, effective communication skills.
  • The physical ability to climb ladders/steps and work in elevated areas, and lift and carry heavy objects. While performing duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, use hands and fingers, handle, feel or operate objects, tools or controls; and reach with hands and arms. The employee is frequently required to sit, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, talk and hear.
  • The ability to independently solve problems and work with minimal supervision.
  • Basic computer skills with operating knowledge of Microsoft software.
  • Must be able to perform call out duties as needed. Employees are periodically required to perform emergency work during various hours of the day, and through the week. Therefore, employees must be capable of working odd hours and or days when called upon and must respond to callouts within a reasonable period of time.
  • Available to work overtime as needed.

Essential Functions

  • Perform and document DOT inspections of equipment as well as inspections of one’s work area.
  • Perform regular housekeeping duties in assigned areas, as well as document housekeeping audits-maintain a safe and clean work environment.
  • Assist team with maintaining an up-to-date working parts inventory system for equipment.
  • Work and coordinate with supervisors, dispatchers, crew leaders, and other employees to strive for continuous improvements, safety, and operational efficiency.
  • Communicate effectively with employees.
  • Perform mechanical and electrical repairs on fleet units within the MLDS Trucking operation-including tractors, pneumatic trailers, and shop truck.
  • Perform various mechanical duties within the operation on equipment such as power tools, pumps, shop doors, blowers, and building maintenance.
  • Maintain accurate and precise records of repair orders for each piece of equipment.
  • Perform call out duties as needed at various locations. Must be able to be on call periodically as required by management.
  • Drop and hook equipment daily utilizing fleet equipment.

Safely perform maintenance/electrical work determined to be level A quality; this includes efficiency

  • Work with a minimal amount of supervision
  • Required to work hours other than daylight

Ancillary Functions

  • Able to train others
  • Must be available to work day and evening shifts as well as participating in the after-hours/on call rotation.
  • Able to assess equipment failure and lead a troubleshooting discussion
  • Able to determine immediate and basic causes as defined by MLDS
  • Able to complete the necessary repairs alone/as part of a team, (Determined by Management)

Required to work around hazardous conditions

  • Required to work in all weather conditions such as heat, humidity, rain, cold, snow, and ice.
  • Required to work in a noisy environment
  • Required to work around moving equipment and heavy machinery
  • Required to wear safety equipment such as earplugs, helmets, goggles, protective clothing, steel-toed shoes, and on occasion, breathing apparatus
  • Required to sit, stand, walk, for extended periods of time
  • Required to bend, reach and safely lift objects weighing up to 100 lbs.
  • Required to make precisely coordinated movements of the fingers of one or both hands to grasp, manipulate, or assemble very small objects
  • Required to quickly make coordinated movements of one hand, a hand together with its arm, or two hands to grasp, manipulate or assemble objects
  • Required to climb or work in high places
  • Required to work in tight or closed-in spaces
  • Other items as required by the position Physical Demand Analysis
  • Other items as determined by Management

Performance measures include but are not limited to monitoring the Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) associated with the position, performing equipment repair and maintaining a clean and safe work area.
