Assists Transfer Station Technicians by directing traffic and unloading customer vehicles, provides direct assistance to customers at Transfer Station. Removes recyclable materials from solid waste delivered to Transfer Station. Maintains Transfer Station grounds and provides litter control activities.

Salary upon hire is step 1 through 3 ($20.71 to $22.20 per hour) for a Transfer Station Laborer, dependent upon qualifications.

Progressive increases are based upon years of service with Skagit County, up to step 8 total steps (top step $26.39). Transfer Station Laborer is range 8 of the salary schedule Public Works (AFSCME).

Essential Functions:

Directs Transfer Station traffic to appropriate areas for off-loading of solid waste materials.

Directs and assists public in off-loading of solid waste materials, assists public in placing recyclable materials in proper recycling containers.

Visually screens solid waste materials for acceptability and directs the removal of unacceptable wastes.

Conducts on-going grounds maintenance.

Fuels and assists with lubing equipment.

Conduct routine litter patrol of Transfer Station grounds.

Operates Forklift as needed.

Share with other Facility employees the responsibility of maintaining the Transfer Station in a clean and orderly manner.

Hand out educational material related to solid waste and recycling to the public and answer questions within scope of authority.

Assist with providing breaks for Transfer Station Technicians and Scale House Attendants, including cash handling.

Perform other duties as may be assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Licenses and/or Certifications:
Valid Washington State Drivers License.

Industrial First Aid Certification (preferred), or ability to obtain within 6 month of hire

Current forklift certification (preferred), or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire.

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Majority of work is outside at the solid waste Transfer Station, with routine exposure to municipal and household solid waste, adverse weather conditions, dust, dirt and odiferous conditions. Work requires standing walking, climbing, and ability to lift heavy objects. Must have sufficient hand-eye coordination to safely operate equipment.

Requires the knowledge of:

Work hazards and safety procedures.

Requires the ability to:

  • Push seventy-five (75) pounds and lift fifty (50) pounds.
  • Work safely in an industrial and high traffic environment.
  • Provide excellent customer service to the general public.
  • Follow work instructions and complete work independently.
  • Safely operate small tools and minor equipment (mowers, trimmers, etc)
