Tacoma Public Utilities Power Management division is looking for a Term Energy Trader to join their team. This position takes a lead role in developing innovative strategies to hedge portfolio risk and optimize the value of the Tacoma Power resource portfolio. We are looking for an experienced term trader to hedge the Tacoma Power portfolio through structuring wholesale energy and energy-related transactions within defined policies and procedures.

Responsibilities Include:
  • Lead the wholesale marketing team’s understanding of impending industry changes, specifically due to climate legislation, organized markets, and resource adequacy. Track and understand the impacts of these changes to our wholesale trading. Determine optimal wholesale trading strategies to best take advantage and/or mitigate the impacts of market changes. Actively contribute to high level thinking around energy markets, customer needs, and our business’s strategy. Advocate for Tacoma Power’s interests in regional forums and wholesale energy trading organizations.
  • Lead the deal origination and structuring function. Identify, develop, and value non-standard wholesale products that Tacoma Power can offer from our carbon-free hydroelectric portfolio. Develop strong professional relationships with counterparties and negotiate mutually beneficial deals. Keep abreast of industry trends and new products that are needed in the region.
  • Lead and supervise the Term Trading Team that is comprise of the supervisor and two Near-Term Traders. The Term Trading Team is responsible for all term (out through 24 months), balance-of-the-month, and day-ahead transactions. Ensure that the team members are trained and appropriately staffed for supporting these mission-critical functions.
  • Develop a thorough understanding of the volatility and uncertainty of managing a resource portfolio that is predominately hydroelectric and customer loads that are highly variable and weather dependent. Use this knowledge to proactively refine wholesale trading strategies.


QUALIFICATIONS:


  • Bachelor's degree in business administration, economics, engineering, or related field (additional utility operations, marketing, or economics experience may be substituted for years of education)
  • Five years' experience in power marketing or utility operations
  • Experience interacting with CAISO and Western EIM preferred;





KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS:

  • Strong written and verbal communications skills
  • Experience in power generation and energy/utilities sector
  • Experience managing an uncertain and volatile market position
