Job Description
The Desert Research Institute’s (DRI) Division of Atmospheric Sciences is seeking a Staff Research Scientist, Atmospheric Chemistry, to advance novel and applied research into properties of atmospheric aerosols. This position is located in DRI’s Northern Nevada Science Center in Reno, NV. The successful candidate will perform laboratory experiments, collect ambient aerosols, perform chemical analysis of collected sample using gas and liquid chromatography, analyze and report research results. The successful candidate is expected to have demonstrated expertise in working with organic analytical techniques, aerosol size distribution measurements, and knowledge of aerosol thermodynamics. Additional responsibilities include documenting research results in technical reports and manuscripts submitted for publication in the peer-reviewed literature, as well as participation in writing competitive research grant proposals.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited institution; preferred discipline in atmospheric sciences, chemistry, or engineering
  • Demonstrated expertise in atmospheric aerosol measurements using size spectrometers and filter-XAD techniques.
  • Demonstrated expertise in gas and liquid chromatography.
  • Demonstrated expertise in atmospheric chemistry.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently in the design and execution of novel research.
  • Ability to contribute to collaborative research and work collegially in a group setting.
  • Ability to fulfill project goals and meet project deadlines.
  • Ability to publish peer-reviewed publications.
Preferred Qualifications
  • M.S. or Ph.D. from an accredited institution; preferred discipline in atmospheric sciences, chemistry, or engineering
  • Experience with aerosol thermodynamics studies using thermodenuders and other techniques
  • Experience with Python programming as a tool in scientific and engineering analysis
Conditions of Employment
  • Ability to perform physical tasks of moving or lifting objects up to 30 lbs. and standing for long periods of time.
  • Use of chemicals, glassware, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), and gas cylinders are required.

Compensation and Benefits
Minimum starting salary is $50,000 commensurate with experience and education. DRI offers a benefits package that includes health, dental, vision, life and long-term disability insurance; including 15.5% retirement match, 24 annual leave days, beginning balance of 30 sick leave days, 11 paid holidays, educational benefits, and the choice of two health insurance plans that can be supplemented with flexible spending accounts or health savings accounts. Additionally, there is no state income tax and no social security deduction. This position is eligible for relocation assistance.
