Position
MIO's commodity investments team seeks a Commodity Researcher to work with our Portfolio Managers within the commodity team as they i) perform initial and ongoing investment due diligence on third-party managers, and ii) conduct fundamental research into direct commodity futures trading opportunities with their team of Quantitative Research Analysts.



MIO invests as a limited partner in a large variety of alternative investment managers (including those that trade commodity futures). Our investments are global and may include higher-risk strategies as well as emerging managers. In addition, MIO operates a substantial Separately Managed Account platform, where it hires third-party managers as sub-advisors. The commodity investments team is focused on sourcing and diligencing both discretionary and systematic fundamentals-based commodity futures trading strategies.



The new hire will report directly to the Head of Commodity Investments. This is a full-time, permanent employment opportunity. Our office is in New York City, and MIO has adopted a flexible, hybrid model that supports a blend of in-office and remote work.



Primary responsibilities
The Commodity Researcher will execute the following responsibilities:
Third-party manager selection:

  • Work with the PM team to further expand the universe of potential managers that exist and help them classify and flag potentially interesting managers
  • Join PMs in select manager meetings (from initial to ongoing due diligence) to take notes, make observations, and create post-meeting documentation
  • Keep track of related follow-ups/to-dos
  • Conduct data requests and follow-up communications directly with third-party managers
  • Provide leverage to PMs by helping to draft manager write-ups, etc.

Research and trading:

  • Help onboard new sources of fundamental data
  • Manage and ensure quality of disparate datastreams consumed by the commodity team
  • Source, review, and synthesize for distribution, ongoing third-party research (e.g., from banks and industry publications) to PMs and QRA team
  • Conduct ad hoc research, working with PMs and QRAs

Profile of the successful candidate
The ideal candidate will have the following capabilities:

  • Experience and understanding of general and/or specific commodity markets: have experience researching and analyzing the drivers of supply and demand in various commodity markets and have a developed intuition for relevant fundamental economic relationships
  • Be excited to contribute to our manager selection and trading research process without participating in risk-taking: this role will focus on research and analysis and will not lead to a risk-taking position on the team
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral: able to take clear and detailed notes, synthesize thoughts and write detailed explanations with proficiency. Able to communicate clearly and effectively with both internal (PMs/QRAs) and external (third-party managers) contacts.
  • Strong project management skills: able to work on multiple projects at the same time, structure and maintain detailed to-dos lists, prioritize workstreams as needed, set milestones, and manage deadlines
  • Naturally curious learner with strong analytical mindset and superior attention to detail: the likely candidate will be a naturally curious person who asks lots of questions throughout their research process, prefers to structure their analysis upfront and takes great care to ensure the accuracy of all details. In addition, the candidate should have a continuous improvement mindset; we believe we can always improve our processes and practices and need to evolve as industry context and market conditions change.


Desired background

  • Experience in a highly regarded investment organization (buy-side or sell-side) with a strong focus on the commodity sector
  • 4+ years of work experience post college or graduate degree
  • 2+ years of experience conducting fundamental research on commodity markets
  • Distinctive academic pedigree; a bachelor’s, master’s, or PhD degreE

Certain US states require MIO Partners, Inc. to include a reasonable estimate of the salary range for this role. A reasonable estimate of the range for new joiners for this role in the United States is $185,000-$185,000. Actual salaries may vary and may be above or below the range based on various factors, including, but not limited to an individual’s assigned office location, experience, and expertise. Certain roles are also eligible for bonuses, subject to MIO’s discretion and based on factors such as individual and/or organizational performance.
