The Reinsurance Specialist is responsible for assumed and ceded reinsurance accounting, billing, critical analysis, and reporting.


Effective performance of the essential functions of this position requires regular in-person, on-site interaction with colleagues, both for purposes of relationship building and meaningful collaboration.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Ensure accurate reporting of all reinsurance calculations for ceded premiums and loss and loss expense recoveries for the P&C and Medical Trust companies
  • Coordinate data for both internal and external audits and serve as the primary contact with the auditors for their review of the reinsurance operations
  • Prepare detailed monthly workbooks that summarizes premium and claim information used to generate accounting entries and ultimately the financial statements
  • Precisely calculate premium true-ups, profit commissions and reinstatement premiums
  • Ensure accurate reporting of assumed premium and loss activity received from Liberty (WC) and Auto (Great American)
  • Prepare the reinsurance exhibits for the annual statements of Church Insurance Company (CIC) (Schedule F) and CIC-Vermont (ceded exhibit) as well as the reinsurance footnotes for the audit reports
  • Assess the recoverability of reinsurance balances receivable
  • Critically analyze past insurance claims and premium data and reinsurance attachment points, to assist management in their assessment of the effectiveness of the reinsurance program
  • Critically analyze the profitability of WC and Auto (the assumed business) across CIC-Vermont and CIAC
  • Ensure that all balances due from ceded reinsurers are accurately billed, accounted for, and collected on a timely
  • Precisely apply cash receipts and payments to the proper contract and reinsurer
  • Ensure the completeness, accuracy, and timeliness of reinsurance premiums payments
  • Continue to streamline, enhance, and document policies and procedures relating to reinsurance processing to increase quality, effectiveness, and productivity
  • Maintain the summary of reinsurance terms and limits for each policy year
  • Provide accurate information and timely reporting to maintain reinsurer relationships
  • Liaise and collaborate with the claims department regarding losses documentation and claim related questions needed for reporting to the reinsurers
  • Safeguard the operational aspects of the reinsurance programs to ensure that they are in compliance with the terms of the reinsurance
  • Ensure the completion of special assignments and projects as assigned
  • Participate in external and internal management and technical training programs

  • This is a technical position and the incumbent must be able to interpret reinsurance contracts and have working familiarity with a wide spectrum of reinsurance programs: Quota Share, Excess of Loss, Facultative, Treaty, Stop Loss, and Aggregates Individual must have working knowledge of profit commissions, reinstatement provisions, ceding commissions etc. This position also has responsibility for completion of “Schedule F” in Annual Statements which relates to Reinsurance, Surplus and Surplus penalties.
  • Knowledge of Reinsurance accounting principles, STAT and GAAP financial reporting, quarterly and annual statement preparation, general ledger reconciliations, cash management and internal accounting
  • Knowledge of general ledger and sub-ledger applications
  • Excellent critical thinking and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills


Education and Experience


  • 10+ years of reinsurance/finance Prior experience in reinsurance accounting with insurance or other related industry preferred.
  • BS in a financial/business management

Salary Range: $99,400 – $129,200
