The Center for Latin American & Caribbean Studies is looking for an Academic Program Coordinator (Program Coordinator, Senior) to join a dynamic group furthering the study and knowledge of Latin America and the Caribbean at Duke and beyond.

The mission of CLACS is to Create a supportive, intellectually stimulating, and interdisciplinary environment for students, faculty, and community members interested in the study of Latin America and the Caribbean. Bring together members of our local and worldwide community (K-16schools, community colleges,universities , scholars, artists, activists, civic organizations, etc.)in order to promote new ideas, research, and cultural awareness about Latin America & the Caribbean# Prepare better-educated citizens and future leaders who may work in fields related to Latin America and the Caribbean in academics, business, arts, government, and other careers. We fulfill this mission through:

Educational Activities (guest speakers; course development; visiting artists; outreach to local schools, businesses, and media; service-learning opportunities; certificate programs; etc.).

Research Support (travel grants; conference awards; publications; conferences).

Creating Social Networks and Building Community (collaborations with NC public schools, other universities, community colleges, student organizations, and alumni; visiting professors; and through internships, and social events).

Job Description: The Academic Program Coordinator is responsible for:


  • (35%) Managing all Latin American and Caribbean Studies undergraduate activities and competitions including:
    • Directing and promoting the undergraduate certificate in Latin American Studies, including Trinity College approval process;
    • Advising undergraduates about courses and opportunities related to region;
    • Serve as Director of Undergraduate Studies for Latin American and Caribbean Studies;
    • Teach capstone course for undergraduate certificate at least once a year.

  • (10%) Additional undergraduate-focused responsibilities:
    • Collaborating with Latin American student groups on campus such as Desarrolla, Students of the Caribbean, Bass Connections groups, etc. Assist them with organizing events, networking, etc.;
    • Organizing annual CLACS commencement certificate ceremony.
    • Administering the Mellon Undergraduate Research Travel Grants competition (includes managing competition guidelines and application process, and working with selection committee to choose grantees.

  • (15%) Managing the Andrew W. Mellon Visiting Professorship
    • Coordinating the faculty nomination, selection and notification process;
    • Guiding the visiting professor through the US visa application process (working with Duke Visa Services)
    • Assisting the visiting professor with finding housing, travel arrangements, etc.;
    • Working with Franklin Center business office on payroll for visiting professor;
    • Assisting the visiting professor with planning courses, course approval process, advertising, etc.;
    • Organizing welcome reception.

  • (15%) Managing a series of programs/activities for Graduate/Professional School students, including:
    • Managing Graduate Certificate in Latin American Studies, including Graduate School approval process;
    • Serve as Director of Graduate Studies for Latin American and Caribbean Studies;
    • Serving as a resource for graduate students seeking connections and career paths in Latin America;
    • Tracking Duke masters degree and PhD alumni who have studied Latin America and the Caribbean (for reporting and networking purposes);
    • Develop networks and work with Fuqua School’s Latin American Students Association (LASA), Sanford School’s Latin American and Caribbean (LAC) Group, Working Group on Environment in Latin America (WGELA), etc.

  • (10%) Providing administrative support to the Duke Brazil Initiative (DBI), including:
    • Managing funded programs and budgets; organizing DBI-sponsored events;
    • Helping to organize and implement annual Global Brazil Conference;
    • Working with faculty directors to develop long-range plan for DBI;
    • Grant-writing for internal and external funding, including developing budgets;
    • Liaison between CLACS and all other departments and centers to create greater institutional connections and interest for DBI research and programming.

  • (10%) Title VI Grant Proposals and Reporting
    • Collecting data for faculty bios, course lists, student placement reports, degree description reports;
    • Draft curriculum sections of new grant proposals, etc.

  • (5%) Co-supervising CLACS student assistants; assign work tasks.

Education and training preferred: Graduate level degree with a background in Latin American Studies, including knowledge of the field gained through formal university training as well as experience living in a Latin American country.

Experience required: Three years administrative experience in academic advising, teaching, or related engagement with undergraduate and graduate students; as well as event planning; grant writing.


Desired Skills:


  • Proficiency in oral and written Spanish required; proficiency in Portuguese also desired.

  • Enthusiasm and entrepreneurial skills necessary for developing programs, setting programmatic goals, and achieving them. Good coordinating and organizational skills and careful attention to detail required. Capacity to exercise independent judgment and work simultaneously on multiple tasks. Ability to work well with others and to represent the Latin American and Caribbean Studies and programs effectively to outside contacts.

  • Demonstrated writing and editing skills. Knowledge of office procedures, ability to supervise administrative details, working knowledge of Microsoft Office suite, especially Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.

Minimum Qualifications


Education

Work requires analytical, communications and organizational skills generally acquired through completion of a bachelor's degree program.


Experience


Work requires three years ofexperience in program administration or involving academic, instructional or counseling activities to acquire skills necessary to plan, coordinate and implement a variety of programactivities and events.
