Description:

Responsible for performing and observing chemical tests on patients’ specimens and correctly records all results. Uses and maintains all laboratory equipment correctly.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for maintaining and using all instruments in the Clinical Laboratory safely and correctly.
  • Performs quality control procedures and maintains records on these checks.
  • Performs calibrations in compliance with manufacturer’s requirements.
  • Performs proficiency testing specimens in compliance with policy.
  • Responsible for documenting temperatures/humidity checks.
  • Responsible for preparing specimens for tests that are referred out.
  • Performs calculations accurately.
  • Notifies patient care unit and/or physician of all critical test values.
  • Always verifies that the proper specimen is being analyzed for the proper patient and for the indicated test procedure.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of new testing methods, products and instrumentation; remains informed on all current technologies.
  • Maintains inventory of necessary supplies and submits orders appropriately.
  • Initiates the meeting of responsibilities without prompting.
  • Demonstrates the values to team concept on a consistent basis.
  • Interacts professionally with all department members, physicians, staff, administration and the Director of Clinical Laboratory and Pathology.
  • Responsible for documenting correct information for billing purposes.
  • Identifies the patient - comparing patient information on the requisition to the patient’s identification band before venipuncture is performed.
  • Receives and logs patient specimens: urine, blood, body fluids, etc.
  • Consistently draws blood competently (choosing appropriate sites) and expediently with as little patient discomfort as possible.
  • Is knowledgeable about which color top tube to use and the volume of blood needed - knows test requirements.
  • Labels test tubes in compliance with labeling policy requirements.
  • Perform other duties as assigned
Requirements:


  • Associate or Bachelor of Science Degree in Medical Technology, Chemistry or Biology.
  • Documentation of training as a Medical Technician/Technologist.
  • Certified as a Medical Technician/Technologist in one of the following: HEW, ASCP, ASMT, CLS, AMT, or eligible.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent; one to two years related experience and/or training preferred.
  • Maintains professional growth and development though seminars, workshops, and professional affiliation to keep abreast of the latest trends in the field of expertise
  • Seeks feedback to enhance own performance
  • Completes annual educational requirements
