SUMMARY OF POSITION: A Medical Technician/Technologist performs laboratory procedures using established and approved protocols, which require the broad exercise and independent judgment and responsibility with minimal technical supervision; maintains equipment and records; performs quality assurance activities related to test performance; and may also function as a supervisor, educator, manager, or researcher with the medical laboratory setting. The MT reports to a supervisor or laboratory director.

1. Follows established procedures for collecting and processing biological specimens for analysis. Evaluates and solves related problems.

2. Performs routine and complex analytical tests and procedures; recognizes deviation from expected results; analyzes and corrects problems using scientific principles.

3. Analyzes quality control data, makes judgments concerning the results, and takes appropriate action to maintain accuracy and precision.

4. Recognizes abnormal results; answers inquiries regarding the test results, methodology, test specificity and sensitivity, and specific factors that can influence test results.

5. Operates instruments within the scope of training utilizing established protocols and quality control checks.

6. Recognizes equipment malfunctions and corrects problems within the scope of training utilizing established protocols.

7. Communicates information such as test results, normal range, and specimen requirements to authorized sources.

8. Performs routine quality control and maintains accurate records. Recognizes out-of-control results and notifies supervisory personnel.

9. Demonstrates laboratory technical skills to new employees and students; gives direction and guidance to MLT's and support personnel.

10. Develops special projects.

QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION: Have earned a certificate of completion from a medical laboratory program prior to 1974, or (preferred) an associate or baccalaureate degree in the field of applied laboratory science or medical laboratory technology from an accredited institution, or successfully bridged from an associate degree to baccalaureate degree status based on required years of experience and successful registration examination by a nationally accredited laboratory credentialing agency.

CREDENTIALS: Have initial certification with an accredited credentialing agency, or working towards completion of certification, and maintain certification compliance with required continuing education.

PATIENT CONTACT: Must have the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served.

CHEMICALS: The medical technologist is subject to exposure to toxic and carcinogenic substances and fumes.

PHYSICAL:
STANDING: The position requires prolonged standing.

WALKING: The position requires some walking and many times will required that the medical technologist is in a stooped or bending position.

LIFTING: Some lifting is required of up to 50 pounds.

VISUAL: Good eyesight is required.

HEARING: Good hearing is required.

SPEAKING: Good communication skills are required.

12:30pm-11pm with rotating weekends
