A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A MECHANICAL ENGINEER

As a Mechanical Engineer, you help us develop new capabilities for our observatory and improve upon the systems we already have in place. Using 3-D computer-aided design (CAD) and finite element analysis (FEA) technology, you create a variety of mechanical and optomechanical systems. You work closely with multi-disciplined teams to shepherd projects from start to finish, providing guidance at every stage, including design, drafting, fabrication, assembly, and installation.

In addition to new projects, you help us maintain existing technology. You troubleshoot and repair mechanical systems that are causing issues, working closely with technicians and front-line staff to promote safety, efficiency, and rigorous performance standards. Your satisfaction comes from finding innovative solutions to complex mechanical problems and using your expertise to support cutting-edge scientific discovery!


QUALIFICATIONS FOR A MECHANICAL ENGINEER

  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or a related field
  • 3+ years of mechanical systems hardware development experience
  • Experience building a machine that moves and requires power
  • Experience with static and modal finite element analysis (FEA)
  • Experience supporting field installation and testing of mechanical systems
  • Proficiency using Solidworks CAD software
  • Proficiency in geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GDT)
  • Proficiency in component and assembly drawing generation
  • Familiarity with CAD data configuration management, large assembly management, and DWG release lifecycles
  • Experience generating and leading design reviews

Experience creating end-to-end prototypes of mechanical and optomechanical systems, including kinematic mounting and alignment of optical systems, stress and thermal mitigation, precision tolerancing, and optical error analysis is preferred. Experience testing for environmental conditions and designing and implementing hydraulic, pneumatic, closed-loop motion control, and cryogenic instrumentation systems would be a plus.
