Position Summary:
The Ranch Manager is responsible for the management of the ranch staff and cleanliness of the Barn, general care of the ranch animals, training of the horses, and direct supervision of the riding program. The position will act as the lead Equestrian Instructor in planning, scheduling and implementing a structured riding program.

This position does have direct reports.

Essential Functions
Supervisory 30%
Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with Childhelp’s cultural values and performance principles, company policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include:
  • Actively participating in the interviewing and hiring processes and ensuring successful functional onboarding of new employees
  • Planning, assigning and directing work for direct reports
  • Setting reasonable stretch performance goals, providing constructive, balanced, regular performance feedback, and conducting annual performance appraisals
  • Recognizing and rewarding performance excellence
  • Communicating and enforcing company policies and programs
  • Applying corrective action, addressing complaints and resolving problems in a timely fashion, involving and collaborating with leadership and Human Resources as appropriate.

Functional 70%
  • Plan, prepare and implement Ranch activities to include grooming, cleaning, horseback riding/instruction and daily exercise of the horses and other animals using the Ranch Hand, Direct Care personnel or qualified children to assist and maintain schedule.
  • Ensure proper diet and the caring and feeding/watering of all ranch animals.
  • Identify the children's individual comfort levels with animals and provide group or one-on-one instruction to increase comfort levels.
  • Ensure that all aspects of the Village Ranch including animal care and safety for children is maintained in a organized manner.
  • Supervise children who may be eligible for jobs at the ranch, providing regular and consistent limit setting.
  • Plan recreational programs that are tied to the ranch, work with clinical staff and recreational staff to develop and implement experiences that are educational and provide positive experiences for the client participants. (i.e. tours, rodeos and other animal related events)
  • Supervise or perform the feeding and watering of the horses, ponies, sheep, calf, llamas, pigs and all other animals morning and evening.
  • Groom horses, clean hooves, determine veterinary other treatment requirements such as shooing horse, clipping lamas.
  • Move any animals as necessary in keeping with weather and to encourage exercise.
  • Ensure that the barn well maintained to ensure a safe secure environment for children, staff, and other ranch animals, and area is clean and hosed down on a daily basis.
  • Rake loose hay that falls during feeding, in all pens and around the haystack.
  • Use the loose hay to feed the llamas, pigs, sheep, goats etc.
  • Keep tack room, office and equipment clean and free of dust and dirt.
  • In conjunction with Maintenance and Grounds, maintain the area around the ranch in a clean manner.
  • Maintain the grounds immediately around the barn and arena. Rake under trees, clear weeds etc.
  • Ensure fencing around the perimeter of the ranch is secured and in good repair at all times.
  • Perform all other duties assigned by supervisor.

Requirements
Education/Experience/Knowledge/Understanding
  • High school Diploma/GED and five years of experience working with horses and a variety of animals
  • One-year experience working with children giving riding instruction and teaching how to interact with animals
  • Previous supervisory experience

  • Strong verbal, written, and listening communication skills to include communicating clearly, effectively, tactfully, and patiently to a diverse population
  • Strong interpersonal skills and demeanor with the ability to build rapport and garner trust with others

Abilities
  • Ability to pass fingerprint background screening through the Department of Justice, FBI and Child Abuse Index
  • Ability to effectively engage with children from various backgrounds and circumstances
  • Ability to demonstrate dependability and flexibility
  • Ability to understand and solve problems by applying intermediate analytical skills to include collecting all the relevant information and data needed to address the problem; organizing, classifying and synthesizing the data into fundamental issues; from the information, identifying the most probable causes of the problem; reducing the information down into manageable components; identifying the logical outcomes from the analyses of the data collected; and, identifying the options and solutions for addressing the problems analyzed.

Physical Demands
  • Ability to frequently stand, see, hear, speak, and be physically flexible; occasionally sits walk, stoop, lift up to 50 lbs., carry, run and drive; and at times may bend, climb, squat, kneel, push/pull
  • Ability to spend 80% of time outdoors, 20% indoors, withstand moderate noise levels including voice levels 90% of the time, extreme heat up to 118 degrees; wind, rain cold weather; to operate household appliances; to drive an automobile; occasionally work alone; work with others 70% of the time
