Description
Under the supervision of the Business Office & Facilities Director, the position of Library Maintenance Worker performs work necessary to maintain and upgrade facilities, amenities, and grounds at all Rock Island Public Library locations.

Examples of Duties
Operates motorized vehicles, and other grounds maintenance equipment as required to meet the needs of the Department.

Conducts the cleaning, maintenance of both interior and exterior of buildings, system of roads, walks, and amenities.

Promotes safe conditions at all Library facilities.

Safely operates maintenance equipment, including hand and power tools.

Performs basic turf maintenance, pest, and weed management.

Performs basic tree and brush removal, care and maintenance of related equipment, and horticultural projects.

Performs basic manual and mechanical assistance with snow and ice removal from entrances, walks, and location lots.

Performs leaf removal and appropriate disposal.

Performs trash pickup and restroom cleaning.

Takes library vehicles to Public Works Department for regular maintenance, as assigned.

Reports vehicle(s) condition, problems or concerns.

Maintains records on mileage, delivery loads, and other records as needed.

Cleans and washes library vehicles, as needed.

Loads and unloads packages, envelopes, and containers as needed.

Assists with recycling program.

Assists with the set up and tear down of special events and functions.

In the absence of the library delivery driver, may operate the library vehicles in delivering library materials, equipment, and supplies among various library locations and elsewhere, in accordance with maintenance schedule and acceptable safety standards.

Performs related duties as assigned.

Typical Qualifications
Requires the knowledge and mental development equivalent to the completion of four years of high school or any combination of training and experience which provides the following knowledge, abilities, and skills:

Possesses the knowledge and skills related to the methods and materials required for use in the maintenance of buildings and their systems and construction; ability to climb ladders and work from height-intense levels, turf and general grounds maintenance, and hard surface lots, walks, and drives.

General mechanical ability to use various hand and power tools and equipment required for buildings, grounds, and vehicle maintenance. General ability to maintain necessary requirements for equipment.

Experience with light duty trucks and equipment normally associated with utility maintenance, tree trimming, with associated equipment and techniques.

Considerable knowledge of safe driving habits and procedures, including knowledge of the laws and regulations for the operation of motor vehicles.

Ability to perform safety inspections of the vehicles and equipment prior to every use.

Models the Library's mission and values, by dealing with library staff and patrons effectively and courteously.

Works as part of a team by effectively communicating issues to the Business Office & Facilities Director.

Maintain effective and cooperative working relationships with all contract vendors.

Ability to work independently, while exercising initiative and good judgment.

Adheres to established maintenance tasks and assigned time schedule.

Ability to perform the lifting required for loading and unloading vehicles.

Ability to perform basic clerical tasks, such as record keeping and form completion.

Ability to understand instruction given verbally and electronically.

Maintains a neat and professional uniform and appearance during assigned time schedule.

Ability to estimate time and material needed for basic projects.

Supplemental Information
Possession of a valid Class D Illinois driver's license or an equivalent license from the employee's state of residence.
Position is part-time and will work approximately 15-18 hours per week.
May require occasional call-in during off duty hours.

Position qualifies for prorated vacation, sick and holiday pay.

Work is performed both indoors and outdoors and the employee is regularly exposed to weather extremes. Frequently works near moving mechanical parts and sharp hand tools, and regularly exposed to wet, warm, and/or humid conditions, as well as dust, cold, and windy environments. Pushing and pulling hand trucks, cart and dollies.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally move up to 100 pounds. The employee is frequently required to climb ladders and/or stairs, kneel, crouch, reach with hands and arms, sit, push, pull, bend, shovel snow, stand, and use hands and arms to handle and feel objects, tools, or controls. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus
