Seat Summary
Leads the carpentry crew at an assigned project from start of production through finish. When not assigned to a particular project or working at a project with a different lead assigned, it is every lead carpenter’s responsibility to make sure all workers, whether fellow employees or subcontractors, are using best practices in safety and craftsmanship at all times.

Accountability When Managing Only

  • In pre-production, the Lead Carpenter (LC) works with the Construction Manager (CM) and Director of Production to create a realistic timeline and budget for the project. He/she is expected to flag potential issues such as unresolved design details, items that may have unusually long lead-times that need to be ordered before production, details that may not have been accounted for by estimating or design teams.
  • Once a project begins, the lead carpenter set-up the site shop and ensures the site is safe and secure including materials and tool storage. Throughout all phases of construction, the lead carpenter shall collaborate with the Construction Manager to coordinate on-site work-flow and make changes as necessary to improve overall efficiency (eg: moving materials out of subs’ way, changing shop location if needed, etc.)
  • The Lead Carpenter shares the responsibility for maintaining and updating the project schedule with the CM.
  • The LC will manage the on site trade partner relationships and scheduling.
  • The LC is responsible for all material take offs and ordering.
  • The LC is responsible for redlining all shop drawings.
  • The LC is responsible for ensuring that all on site layout is completed accurately and according to plan.
  • Responsible for day to day jobsite cleanliness. Oversees site maintenance and ensures the site is clean, organized, safe and clear of obstructions and hazards at all times.
  • Daily start up procedures: Turn on job site (lights, power, water). Supervise the set up of the site shop for the day (plug in saws and compressors, unpack materials).
  • Daily close down procedures: Direct fellow employees and subs to begin clean up at an appropriate time. If the Construction Manager is not present, or is otherwise unavailable, document progress (update daily log and progress pictures). Turn off the job site (lights, power, water). Confirm the site is clean and ready to close-down. Check for safety hazards (cords and hoses, unplug saws if children are present, etc).
  • Direct fellow employees and trade partners to tasks that accomplish priorities for the day
  • Throughout each day, and in addition to accomplishing your own work, continually check in and supervise other carpenters and trade partners to make sure that they are performing work safely, competently, and in-line with company practices and quality control. Provide training and instruction on proper tool use and installation techniques whenever necessary to fellow employees.
  • Stay ahead of materials ordering and deliveries to ensure work can be done efficiently and on a continual basis and that job site is properly stocked including but not limited to both day-to-day supplies and large material procurements.
  • Collaborate with Project Manager in formulating and managing completion of punch list.
  • Assist move-in and transition to finished space.
  • Participate in job feedback by contributing to Lessons Learned and representing the production team in Jobtopsy.

Essential Knowledge, Skills & Experience

  • 4 or more years of relevant experience in carpentry
  • RRP Training a plus
  • CSL a plus
  • OSHA-10 required
  • Extensive General carpentry skills
  • Ability to read and build from plans
  • Generate stock lists and place orders
  • Draw details as needed for custom parts and attachments

Working Environment & Physical Requirements

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles, moving mechanical parts and vibration. The employee is occasionally exposed to a variety of extreme conditions at construction job sites. The noise level in the work environment and job sites can be loud.

The employee must frequently lift and move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
