JOB SUMMARY:

Responsible for processing required paperwork and computer entries for new arrestees brought into the Mesa County Detention Facility (County Jail). Sets court dates, processes bonding and release paperwork, mitts, writs, etc… Communicates with court personnel, other agencies, and has direct contact with inmates housed in the booking area. Helps ensure the safety, security, and care to those inmates housed in the booking area by observation of inmates in cells and conducting visual security checks, allowing inmate movement in and out of cells, recognizing inmate emergencies and notifying Deputies via radio, along with documenting inmate behavior and incidents. This is a civilian non-sworn position.

Essential Duties

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

JAIL – BOOKING:

Receives and reviews paperwork associated with incarceration to ensure accurate completion; notarizes affidavits from the arresting officer; obtains information from inmate and paperwork (receives and checks warrant, writ, detainer, holds, bonds, etc.) and makes appropriate computer entries; completes schedule for court appearance or transport to another jurisdiction.

Receives, stores, and documents incoming property and funds; issues receipts to inmates; retrieves property upon release.

Completes release process to include; typing bonds, updates computerized record, checks to ensure inmate is not pending other charges awaiting disposition, notifies other agencies when inmate is available for transfer, ensures proper paperwork is completed for inmate release, assures payment of bond, returns personal property and funds.


Coordinates directly with various court clerks, District Attorney, Probation, and ICE for hold notification and scheduling court dates, ongoing review of information on all inmates related to court dates, sentencing, bond information, affidavits, and enters this into records management system.

Performs and documents security checks to ensure the welfare of inmates on suicide and medical watches; monitors behavior of inmates in the booking area to ensure safety, security and welfare of inmates and staff.


Monitors radio transmission for emergency situations and reacts appropriately.


Prepare arrest information for fingerprinting and DNA (if applicable) of inmates and assists with finger printing when needed.


Posts money orders and other funds to appropriate inmate accounts.


Monitors inmates for possible medical problems, inmate fights, or other emergent situations and calls medical staff and/or Deputies for assistance is required.


Responds to inmate, bondsman and public requests in regard to bond amount,

release dates and court appearances. Handles both telephone and personal inquiries,

providing requested information per policy


Using the CBI terminal, locate and/or cancel warrants for all law enforcement agencies;

communicate with other criminal justice agencies in response to or requests for information

as needed. Work directly with MCSO Sex Offender Unit to provide notifications upon booking and release.


Miscellaneous


Operate with a minimum of supervision, and perform additional related duties as assigned by a supervisor.

Control keys to booking area and supply room.

Provide notary public services to internal employees and other law enforcement personnel.

Write incident reports related to incidents in booking, found or missing property for supervisory review.

Be prepared to testify in court when required to do so.

Written communications must be clear and effective.

Other Duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

Education and Experience:

High school diploma or equivalent

Any combination of education, training and experience which provides the following knowledge, skills and abilities required for the job:

Computer experience, knowledge of Microsoft Word desirable, Customer service experience, good writing and spelling skills, able to communicate both oral and written clearly and effectively, able to work with the public and/or inmates in stressful situations.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT:
This position requires standing, stooping, sitting, bending, twisting, and lifting up to 25 pounds.
The employee may come in contact with members of the general public who are upset or under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
Be required to work rotating shifts, holidays and weekends.
The employee may be exposed to contagious diseases and other serious health conditions of inmates or inmate visitors.
The employee may be exposed to volatile and\or unpredictable behavior of inmates or inmate visitors.
The employee may be exposed to inmates or inmate visitors who are under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol.
The employee may be exposed to inmates or inmate visitors who are unclean and/or not fully dressed.

Recruiting and Hiring Incentives
In an effort to attract the most qualified candidates, the following financial incentives may be used for individuals with specific experience, skills, or education:
  • Fluent in both English and Spanish at the time of hire - $5,000.00 bonus
  • Associates Degree or 60 credit hours from an accredited college - $3,000.00 bonus
  • Bachelors Degree from accredited college - $5000,00 bonus
  • Masters Degree from accredited college - $7000.00 bonus
  • Active duty military service of 2 or more years - $4000.00 bonus
  • Three or more years of related work experience - applicant will be hired at Step 3 of the pay range as described in the Pay Plan Policy 1034
Part-time Employees .5 FTE will be eligible for the incentives at 50% of the amount of bonus and paid in the same way full time employees receive them.
Only one bonus will be awarded per applicant; however, applicant may qualify for the step increase for experience and one bonus level.
All bonuses will be paid in two parts:
  • 50% of bonus paid upon completion of the field-training program.
  • Remaining 50% paid upon completion of the first full year of employment.
Current employees may also be awarded a one-time $500.00 bonus for recruiting an applicant upon the referred applicant's completion of the field-training program. Pay period when cleared. Paid from Division the person they recruited was hired for.
