Journeyman Lineworker

RATE OF PAY:

  • Bargaining Unit Position: $50.42/hour
  • Journeyman training wage $49.41/hour

LOCATION: Brighton, CO or Longmont, CO

WORK HOURS: 6:30a.m.–5:00p.m., half-hour lunch, either Monday-Thursday or Tuesday-Friday. Overtime as necessary. On-call per bargaining agreement.

POSITION PURPOSE AND OBJECTIVE:

Works under the direct supervision of a Working Foreman, Manager of Operations/Engineering, District Manager and Operations Superintendent. Performs numerous duties including construction, maintenance and repair of distribution and transmission lines and related facilities, service work and other related and assigned duties.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Frequently constructs underground and overhead transmission and distribution lines which includes digging pole and anchor holes, framing poles, setting poles and anchors, stringing, sagging armor rod, down guy, connecting conductor, pad mount gear and related tasks of new construction or energized and de-energized lines.

On a daily basis, the Journey Lineworker maintains both underground and overhead distribution and transmission electric system by replacing damaged transformers, breakers, regulators, poles, conductor, insulators, meter loops, switching gear and related equipment on energized and de-energized lines.

Frequently performs various duties related to customer service (i.e. reading meters, performing service changes, troubleshooting service outages, voltage tests and completing outage reports).

Performs related duties daily including taking inventory, accounting for materials used, loading and unloading materials, and inspecting distribution and transmission line as part of a preventive maintenance program.

Must be able to react to change productively and handle other tasks as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Must have high school diploma or G.E.D. plus completion of technical training in line maintenance, construction and safety. Must have completed a four-year certified apprenticeship program and have experience in line construction and maintenance. A Journey Lineworker Certificate is required.

Must have a valid Colorado driver’s license before employment and a CDL license within 90 days after being employed.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:

Must live within a 15-mile radius distance from the assigned office within 90 days from hired. Those working at the Brighton office may also live within the city limits of Fort Lupton, Hudson, Keenesburg, Dacono, Frederick, Firestone and area from Highway 52 south to Highway 7, east of Platte River and west of Interstate 76.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  • Knows, understands and applies all OSHA regulations and APPA Safety Manual rules necessary to perform the job. Understands and follows established electric construction and maintenance specifications including those of the Rural Utility Services, the National Electric Code and those adopted by United Power, Inc.
  • Ability to operate a cell phone/two-way radio under established procedure and FCC rules. Ability to operate a lap top computer and understand the mapping program.
  • Ability to accurately read and interpret staking sheets and maps on a daily basis.
  • Ability to operate a bucket truck, boom digger, trencher, backhoe and other various equipment as required on the job.
  • Must be able to apply CPR/first aid techniques.

ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL AND MENTAL DEMANDS:

Thirty percent (30%) of the time is spent standing, thirty percent (30%) sitting, and another forty percent (40%) walking. Journey Lineworkers will occasionally lift up to 100 lbs. Carrying up to 50 lbs. is done occasionally when carrying equipment from truck to work site. When doing pole work or moving a transformer, it may be necessary to push and pull approximately 150 lbs.

Operating controls is done constantly while sitting in a vehicle driving and operating machinery. Climbing poles or ladders using feet/legs and hands/arms is done frequently.

Balancing is done constantly while walking and standing on rough and uneven terrain. Occasionally, a Journey Lineworker must stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl. Reaching and handling are done frequently. Fingering and feeling are occasionally necessary while putting up or repairing lines.

Talking in order to exchange ideas over a two-way radio/cell phone and to communicate with other employees in the various offices is done frequently. Journey Lineworker is constantly required to hear radio transmissions. They must also be able to hear faint arcing sounds or transformer humming to quickly determine if equipment is working properly.

A Journey Lineworker will occasionally need to see “near” while working on lines. It is constantly necessary to see “far” while driving, patrolling line or constructing lines. Depth perception and color vision are essential for Journey Lineworkers while driving. While constructing poles and lines, depth perception of vision is constantly necessary.

The job may occasionally require persuasiveness, analytic ability, auditory and tactile discrimination.

Due to possible danger in a Journey Lineworker’s job, it is extremely important that they are always alert, precise, and patient. They must also have ingenuity while working under adverse weather conditions, problem-solving abilities, spatial perception, speaking ability, memory, creativity, concentration, judgment, initiative, reasoning, imagination, and visual discrimination.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
Seventy-five percent (75%) of the Journey Lineworker’s work is done outdoors under constant adverse weather conditions. Noise level is frequently 100-120 decibels.
Journey Lineworkers frequently work under various hazards such as dust in the air, exposure to sunlight and toxic chemicals. Various mechanical and electrical hazards are present. Journey Lineworkers are highly exposed when working on a pole. Danger of electrical burns is a constant hazard.
