Jeanes Fellow Job Description

The Jeanes Fellows program is a modern-day concept that will recapture the energy, passion, and dedication the original Jeanes teachers brought to supporting education through unique roles in our most at-risk communities. Rooted in the historical Jeanes teachers program, the modern-day Jeanes Fellows will address the next needed change to advance strategic equity efforts across North Carolina in 2022.

Reports to: Superintendent or designee

Supervises: As assigned by the superintendent

Term of Employment 12 months (2-year Grant Funded Position; May be extended contingent upon funding.)

Salary Set by district, based on the given experience role(s) of the Fellow

Certification and Qualifications:

• Bachelor's Degree in Education, Counseling, Social Work, or a similar field
• Three to five years of experience in public education as a teacher, social worker, guidance counselor, administrator, or similar position or similar experience in a community sector
• Two years of experience participating in or leading education and community projects

Candidates Should Have Experience at Different Levels of the Organization and/or a Commitment to Developing Capacity in the Following Areas:

• Implementing community-based infrastructure to support the advancement of the target area(s) of focus identified in the district’s strategic plan
• Advocacy regarding student experiences, community needs, school decision-making, and district goals using an equity lens
• Facilitating team-lead design groups to problem-solve and ideate in creative and innovative ways
• Using community assessments and problem-solving models to analyze student data, school data, district strategic plans, and community partnership involvement

Expectations of Jeanes Fellows:

• Attending and participating in Jeanes Fellowship professional development and affinity groups with partnership organizations set by the Jeanes Fellowship
• Collaborating on strategic plan development, creating a program, or project aimed at addressing the strategic goals set by their district
• Connecting and collaborating with other Jeanes Fellows on a routine basis as scheduled by the Jeanes Fellowship

Responsibilities and Duties: The Jeanes Fellow will collaborate with the school district to advance their strategic plan to improve student achievement and increase community partnership through participating in activities such as but not limited to:

• Developing, implementing, and monitoring initiative(s) that advance a specific area of equity of the PSU’s strategic plan through collaboration with PSU leadership and community partners.
• Managing, analyzing, and reporting data related to the Jeanes Fellow’s focus area.
• Incorporating the Jeanes Fellow’s focus area into district equity plans.
• Communicating the status of progress to the local school board and Jeanes Fellows partnership organization.

Providing direct services as follows:

• Training and ongoing coaching to school leadership teams and district personnel on community involvement strategies.
• Training and ongoing coaching to community partnerships on supporting the target area of focus.
• Analyzing and utilizing student, school, district, and community data to guide data-based decision-making
• Supporting teachers and school-based personnel in identifying student needs and providing appropriate community involvement strategies.
