Summary of Position
The University of New Hampshire seeks an Interim Director of the Office of National Fellowships in a term-limited, non-benefited position while this office is being reconfigured. We expect to post a full-time, permanent position with benefits within the next year. The interim director will begin as soon as possible and continue through June 30, 2023. The position is budgeted as full-time and in-person; however, we will consider a remote appointment and/or flexibility in hours.
The Office of National Fellowships Director reports to the Honors Program Director. The Fellowships Director seeks out high-achieving students and provides them with information, counsel, and editorial support in the process of applying for prestigious national and internationally competitive fellowships and scholarships. The Director monitors competitions and remains current on the profiles of each competition seeks successful applicants. The Director assists faculty members who serve as mentors and recommenders and arranges for faculty to take part in interviews and screening committees. The Director assists in press releases and in preparing students for public events on behalf of the University.

Bachelor’s degree and four years of related experience in work that involves planning, organizing, and evaluating educational programs and students; administrative ability; human relations and communications skills, particularly in writing; developmental editing

A rough breakdown of duties and responsibilities:

Individual advising of students. The Director is responsible for working with individual undergraduate and graduate students, assisting them in preparing fellowship applications.

Running information session on awards to introduce groups of students / potential applicants to awards. The Director is responsible for publicizing fellowship opportunities, identifying high ability students and their faculty sponsors, and encouraging them to apply; potential for credit-bearing activities.

Researching opportunities. The Director is responsible for researching additional opportunities for students and keeping abreast of changes in existing fellowship programs. This may include attendance at and participation in national conferences focused on fellowships advising (e.g., NAFA).

Collaboration with other offices. The Director is a member of the academic affairs unit consisting of the Office of National Fellowships, the Hamel Center for Undergraduate Research, and the University Honors Program. The Director should collaborate with the HCUR and the UHP, as well as with inter-campus programs such as Discovery, the Graduate School, the Beauregard Center, and any other administrative units on campus, including the five colleges, to promote fellowship programs and facilitate student success.

Collaboration with faculty. The Director works with colleges, departments, and individual faculty on identifying, recruiting, and supporting students who are applying for fellowships. In addition, the coordinator advises faculty about their role in the student’s success (e.g., letters of recommendation, mock interviews, interview committees, etc.) and recruits faculty as student mentors.

Communications. The Director is responsible for designing, developing, writing, and editing all materials to be used for recruiting, publicity, and educational outreach, for both print and web-based formats, such as letters to faculty, training materials for students, announcements, etc.

Record keeping and assessment. The Director creates and maintains files, both paper, and electronic data; files annual reports to the supervisor both at the end of each grant cycle and at the end of the academic year. In addition, the Director is responsible for participating in ongoing reviews and assessments of the office’s progress toward its mission.

Budget and program management. The Director is responsible for the office budget.

Supervisor of graduate student intern. The Director will train staff graduate student interns, assign them scholarship advice based on their skills and experience, provide continual guidance and mentoring on the professional field, give constructive and timely feedback on job performance, and oversee all work related to leading information sessions, advising students, doing publicity, and any other duties as requested by the Director.

References will be contacted to provide letters of recommendation when an applicant has reached the “Finalist” stage in the hiring process.
