Rose Innovations, LLC, originator of the Knock Out® Family of Roses, is an inventive, horticultural and aquatic operation featuring a high-end, ornamental botanical garden spanning 2 acres. We are seeking a Horticultural Specialist for our location in the Greenfield/Hales Corners area.

Duties:

• Collaborate with the team to ensure that the garden of approximately 2,500 roses, and an additional 5,000 annuals, perennials, woody plants, and the surrounding area are maintained at the highest standards; that the plants are healthy; and the garden is safe and attractive.
• Perform basic horticultural tasks such as planting, fertilizing, pruning, watering, transplanting, propagating and placement.
• Diagnose plant nutrition, pest control, fertilization and herbicide needs.
• Assist with garden design, container plantings, annual display beds, specialty gardens, plant selection and placement.
• Maintain high horticultural standards and practices; providing direction, continuing education and motivation for staff members and volunteers.
• Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Candidate must possess an extensive background in horticulture encompassing design, planting, fertilizing, pruning, watering, transplanting and propagating with a keen eye for placement of annuals, perennials, woody plants, trees and roses. Must be proficient in plant identification, terminology and nomenclature.

In addition the candidate must have a strong desire for on-going education through work experience, on-the-job training and independent study.

The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required for this position.

Education and Experience

• Associates or bachelors degree in horticulture, botany, natural science or related field of study.
• Minimum of 2-3 years of hands-on experience in a public garden or conservatory is highly preferred.
• In-depth knowledge of plant culture, maintenance, and identification.
• Demonstrated knowledge of plants native to Wisconsin.

Language Skills

• Fluent with plant nomenclature and its complexity.
• Proficiency in plant terminology.
• Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations.

Additional Requirements

• Regular attendance.
• Availability to assist with special events.
• Availability to work some weekends.

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; use hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms. The employee is frequently required to walk; sit and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance; talk or hear and taste or smell. The employee must lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move more than 50 pounds with assistance. Specific vision abilities required by this job include color vision and depth perception.

Work Environment

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to wet and/or humid conditions. The employee is frequently exposed to outside weather conditions throughout the year. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

Pay: $17.50 - $20.00 per hour
