Job Description:
Perform labor to help maintain grounds. Assist landscaping staff with edging, trimming, pruning, blowing, weed removal, raking, grass cutting, litter pickup, storm debris clean up, drain cleaning, laying sod, mulching, planting, digging, grading, watering, spraying, cleaning signs, painting, equipment maintenance, pressure washing, concrete repair, and other items related to turf, ornamental, hard scape, and tree maintenance. Ability to operate hand and power equipment under close supervision. Ability to work in adverse weather, overtime work, and weekend work. Ability to lift 50Ibs. Equipment may include: string trimmer, blower, back pack blower and sprayer, ZTR, hedger, edger, pressure washer, riding and push mower.

Job Duties:
75%- Assist turf, horticulture, and arboriculture crews with the general maintenance by edging, trimming, pruning, blowing, weed removal, raking, grass cutting, litter pickup, storm debris clean up, drain cleaning, laying sod, mulching, planting, digging, grading.

10%- Assist with irrigation work, digging, grading, drain basin cleaning, concrete repair labor as needed.

10%- Assist with inspections on mobile equipment and vehicles. Help change blades and tires as necessary on mowers, keep some records. Assist with preventative maintenance as required. Work special events (athletic, fraternity, public, etc.) to assist with litter control and related cleanup.

5%- Perform related work as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:
Valid Louisiana Class E License

NOTE:

May be required to demonstrate physical ability to perform manual work.

Special or Physical Qualifications:
In accordance with University Policy Statement 18, this position is considered essential and may be required to report or stay on campus in the event of an emergency or closure.
Physical ability to perform manual work. Must be capable of walking around the assigned area. Must be able to ascend and descend stairs multiple times daily and stand for extended period of time. Be capable of stooping, kneeling, or crouching. Must be capable of moving furniture/objects that weigh at least 20 lbs and transport cleaning carts and various equipment to different parts of the building.

No experience or training is required.

Job Concepts

Function of Work:
To perform a wide variety of physical tasks in the maintenance and repair of state facilities and intermittent leaderman functions.

Level of Work:
Entry.

Supervision Received:
Close from a skilled employee when assisting that employee (performing skilled trades functions). General supervision is received from foreman when performing repetitive low skilled tasks.

Supervision Exercised:
Periodic leaderman supervision may be exercised over laborers performing simple tasks (grass cutting, loading, and unloading, etc.)

Location of Work:
All agencies, statewide.

Job Distinctions:
Differs from that of Laborer in that it performs some semi-skilled repetitive tasks under general supervision and may work as a helper to a skilled trade job under close supervision and limited potential for a leaderman role over laborers.

Differs from Roads and Grounds Keeper as the latter job performs duties related more to roads, highways and heavy (levee, road shoulder, gravel road, etc.) grounds maintenance.

Differs from Apprentice as that job is designed primarily to provide an understudy function for a skilled trade job.

Examples of Work

Services, washes, oils, and greases light mechanical equipment including cars, trucks, mowers, and tractors.

Assists skilled trades jobs by performing heavy manual operations.

Performs only rough carpentry work in building scaffolds, concrete forms, wooden fences, and shipping crates.

May act as leaderman setting the pace for a group of laborers.

Loads and unloads materials; makes minor repairs to tools; mixes and pours concrete.

Fires and operates an asphalt kettle; occasionally operates a light truck to pick up and deliver spare parts, materials, and equipment.

Operates gasoline pumps and may keep simple records.

May occasionally operate light equipment under close supervision.

Assists in the spraying and eradication of unwanted vegetation.

Fills and sews sacks of commodities, stencils proper markings on bags, and checks weights.

Operates conveyor belts used on loading and unloading barges and ships.

May perform rough sign and other brush and spray painting work.

Repairs and erects metal and wood signs.

Serves as axe man or chairman in a survey team, if necessary.
