MFS, an innovative, dynamic engineering and surveying firm, looking for a driven, career-minded individual to fill our entry level full-time, Staff Engineer I position in our Geotechnical Engineering division.

Role:

Geotechnical/Structural Foundation Engineer responsible for performing geotechnical/structural foundation design as well as perform field special inspections. Special inspection capabilities should include: subsurface soil and rock investigations (borings and test pits), construction plan and specification conformance. The Engineer should also be capable of completing designs and special inspections in support of the following: earth retaining structures (temporary and permanent), shallow foundations, and deep foundations (driven/drilled piles, caissons, etc.). The Engineer should demonstrate strong communication skills and be capable of field coordination with subconsultants and contractors. Engineer should also be able to complete office engineering tasks including designs, drafting, and report preparation.

Office work will be primarily done in the South Plainfield, NJ office. Field work includes regularly commuting to NYC and other locations. There may be night shifts due to night borings, etc.

Responsibilities

  • Knowledge of basic software tools including Microsoft Office Suite and AutoCAD
  • Knowledge of basic lab and field equipment for making evaluations of soil conditions
  • Ability to perform geotechnical field investigations and construction observations
  • Prepare daily detailed site inspection reports and construction/boring logs based on field operations completed
  • Perform technical research in developing solutions to engineering problems including geotechnical evaluations to prepare calculation documents; preparation of detailed geotechnical reports; analysis of geotechnical samples; field testing of soils; design support
  • Interact with other MFS personnel (project managers, staff engineers, field technicians), clients, contractors and equipment vendors
  • Develop a familiarity with regulations governing the implementation and operations of related systems
  • Develop a familiarity with field testing and data collection requirements
  • Work with other discipline team members including engineering professionals, designers and technicians, permit specialists, planners, CAD and graphic specialists, architects, construction management specialists
  • Prepare technical reports, write memos, respond to Request for Information, review and respond to submittals, make recommendations, and convey engineering solutions/recommendations
  • Perform geotechnical analyses and calculations using engineering formulas and assist with drawing, specification, and cost-estimate preparation

Requirements:

  • B.S. in Civil, Geotechnical, or Related Engineering Degree
  • 0-2+ years of experience in analysis of below grade walls, retaining structures, and shallow/deep foundations
  • Experience in conducting subsurface investigations and construction special inspections
  • Proficient in the Microsoft Office suite of products
  • Some knowledge in LRFD/ASD design and complex structural analysis software including RISA, DeepEX, and L-pile
  • Ability to communicate effectively with managers, clients, and contractors
  • Excellent written and verbal communication as well as strong design skills
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable means of transportation
  • Undergo a background check (required)

Preferences:

  • M.S. in Civil, Geotechnical, or Related Engineering Degree
  • Experience with AutoCAD software, gINT geotechnical engineering software

Environmental Factors:

  • Approximately 60% of work will be performed in an external environment, on site, outdoors, exposed to the elements of nature working under normal construction conditions.
  • Approximately 40% of work will be performed in climate-controlled internal office environment working under normal engineering office conditions.
