Position(s): Fisheries Research Assistant.

Location: Arcata, Humboldt County, CA.

Hours: Full Time, Non-Exempt, Benefit Eligible. This is a grant funded position for a
nine-month appointment; October 2022 through June 2023, and a five-month
appointment November 2022 to March 2023.

Pay Rate: $15-17/hr., depending on experience and assigned duties.

Supervisor: This position will work with the supervisor as a Cal Poly Humboldt Sponsored Programs
Foundation employee.

Essential functions of the job:
This position will work with the supervisor as a Cal Poly Humboldt Sponsored Programs Foundation
employee. The position is intended to be full time. Successful candidates must show experience with
standard anadromous fisheries field sampling methods, as well as the ability to use topographic maps, and
GPS units to navigate throughout rural northern California. Incumbents may be responsible for operating
a rotary screw trap, beach seining, tagging, and taking biological measurements on adult and juvenile
salmon and steelhead. Adult population work will also include walking surveys of potential spawning
grounds. Fieldwork will be physically and mentally demanding, requiring participants to hike through
streams carrying survey equipment in winter conditions. Participants will be required to work in
inclement weather and sometimes work long hours. Therefore, successful applicants should be in
excellent physical condition, be able to maintain a positive attitude, work independently, and accurately
follow as well as give instructions.

Minimum Qualifications/Experience:
One-year previous field experience collecting biological data required. Bachelor’s degree in Fisheries or
similar program desired.
