You will be responsible for documenting the life changing experience of our participants and staff on our beautiful campus and surrounding area. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Capturing photo and video of activities and daily life
  • Editing and curating materials to share with families, alums and our community at large, in collaboration with our year round communications coordinator.
  • Working with campers to develop their photography, videography and related skills (in the past our campers have made short films, photo shoots, etc.).

This role can be done as part of one of our program teams (see below) or independently, depending on your experience and interests. Experience in photography, videography and editing are required. Camera and other materials will be provided.

Operating in a summer camp setting, we are at heart an international leadership program with an intentional curriculum and mission which drives all of our programming. A background in education and/or previous experience in teenage youth programs is appreciated but not required.

Program Staff Responsibilities

While some staff members specialize in a program area, all staff are first and foremost general counselors. Primary responsibilities, regardless of position, include:

  • Participating in all scheduled activities while on-duty. The daily program typically starts at 8:30 AM and ends at 10:30 PM (staff have 3 hours off a day).
  • Supervising campers overnight on a rotating basis
  • Prioritizing the positive experience of campers by monitoring the physical and emotional well-being of campers, upholding health & safety procedures, acting professionally, and modeling constructive behavior.
  • Assisting in large-scale and community-wide projects, instructions, or activities.
  • Participating in regular meetings with the staff team.
  • Participating in program evaluation and self-evaluation.
  • Facilitating multiple instructions (90 minute workshops) over the course of the summer.
  • Maintaining a substance-free campus.

CAMP RISING SUN 2023 PROGRAM ROLE DESCRIPTIONS

Below you will find examples of the responsibilities carried out by our team in recent years. Each team has 2-4 staff members who will collectively be responsible for the team’s responsibilities. This list is merely a starting point, we look forward to adapting and building the team, its responsibilities and strengths with you.

COMMUNITY AND SERVICE TEAM

The Community and Service ream’s responsibilities include:

  • Helping campers understand and shape their leadership roles and responsibilities. Supporting campers in these roles, by helping campers prepare for and reflect upon them.
  • Working with the staff team to choose community and service roles for the upcoming week, and managing logistics related to these roles.
  • Coordinating community circles and other community events, in close collaboration with the Wellbeing, Justice, and Ethics team.
  • Organize, support, and facilitate the second-year camper program. This includes:
  • Working with the second-year campers to establish their roles and responsibilities, including pre-season training. Regularly checking in with the second-year campers and providing continuous feedback and support for the duration of the program.

Community and Service team members will have experience in leadership or community organizing and training, experience in group facilitation, leadership, community building, and/or circle keeping, preferably in a training role. Familiarity with the Camp Rising Sun program and our pedagogy is strongly preferred.

CURRICULUM TEAM

The Curriculum team’s responsibilities include:

  • Organizing, supporting, and facilitating the evening program and instruction programming.
  • Working directly with campers and staff to solicit, organize, and schedule instructions and evening programs.
  • Assisting campers, staff members, and visitors in developing intellectually rigorous, methodologically appealing, and diverse instructions and evening programs that meet our curricular standards. Including meeting with campers and staff prior to, and after, their instruction/evening program to offer a space for planning, reflection, and feedback.
  • Organizing guest instructor sessions and/or off-campus learning experiences.
  • Liaise with the Arts, Science, Technology, Society, Wellbeing, Ethics, and Justice, and Nature Education teams.

Curriculum team members will have a background in curriculum development and be well-versed in issues of justice, race, gender, and/or sustainability. Prior experience with Camp Rising Sun is helpful, but not required.

PROJECTS TEAM

The Projects team’s responsibilities include:

  • Working closely with the facility and grounds staff to organize, support, and facilitate the projects program.
  • Providing a daily space where campers feel comfortable initiating and working on large and small-scale projects in a group setting to improve and serve the Camp community.
  • Exposing all campers to hands-on construction/building, project planning and management skills.
  • Organizing and supporting staff and campers involved in construction projects.
  • Managing the project safety plan and teaching safety in all aspects of project planning and execution.
  • Purchasing and managing equipment and supplies within the budget.

Project Team members will be familiar with proper power tool use, construction methods, and safety protocols.

ARTS TEAM

The Arts team’s responsibilities include:

  • Liaising with the curriculum, projects, and community and service teams to ensure arts are present in all parts of our curriculum.
  • Providing leadership opportunities to campers who are interested in the arts and assisting in managing art-related activities at camp, including daily artistic expression, weekly performances, a camp memento etc.
  • Assisting and encouraging all campers, including those who may not have previous exposure to the subject to use art as a form of expression.
  • Maintaining the arts budget, workspace, and inventory. This includes purchasing supplies.

Arts team members will have a background in delivering arts programming. In the past, the arts team has had people versed in drama, music, visual arts, plastic arts, literature, film, photography, and more. We welcome artists and art educators of all kinds.

Society, Science, Technology Team

The Society, Science, and Technology team’s responsibilities include:

  • Liaising with the curriculum, projects, and community and service teams to ensure world affairs, science and technology issues are present throughout the program.
  • Working with campers to express their experiences and perspectives (e.g. organizing writing or reading groups, creating a blog, a yearbook etc.).
  • Documenting everyday camp life through photography and videography
  • Coordinating the use of Camp technology and addressing minor technology issues on site.
  • Maintaining the area budget, workspace, and inventory. This includes purchasing supplies.

Wellbeing, Ethics, and Justice Team

The Wellbeing, Ethics, and Justice team’s responsibilities include:

  • Working closely with our social worker, and liaising with the curriculum, projects, community and service teams to ensure camper and staff wellbeing are central throughout our programming.
  • Coordinate community circles and other community events, in close collaboration with the Community and Justice team.
  • Work with campers and staff to carry out daily teamworks (cleaning, gardening, composting, mail sorting, etc.) to take care of our grounds and community.

Pay: $331.00 - $393.00 per week
