Teaches basic academic skills to students in schools and centers using a variety of teaching techniques, strategies, materials, and equipment to initiate and reinforce learning; develops or modifies curricula and prepares lessons and other instructional materials according to ability levels, language acquisition, and strengths of students; collects data to plan for and assess instruction and to evaluate individual student progress; administers language and achievement tests both formal and informal and prepares reports on the progress of students.


Compiles data, submits reports and organizes budgets pertaining to ESL or Title III as required by VDOE.
Provides resources (advice, teaching materials) to individual classroom teachers with ELLs.
Develops an LEP plan for each ELL, including needed classroom and standardized testing accommodations.
Reviews ELL progress reports with listed accommodations from each classroom teacher with an ELL.
Maintains consistent, substantial contact with ELLs on a regular basis.
Encourages ELLs to set and maintain high academic and behavioral standards.
Employs a variety of instructional techniques and instructional media to meet learning and emotional needs of ELLs involved.
Identifies and screens incoming students for eligibility for ESL services.
Manages the behavior of learners in instructional setting to ensure environment is conducive to the learning process, and assists and participates in management of student behavior in other parts of the school, center, school grounds, or work site.
Coordinates educational activities, as required, with other professional staff, both school and non-school based, to maximize learning opportunities.
Assesses on a continuous basis student achievement through use of formal and informal testing, and maintains appropriate assessment and evaluation documentation for institutional and individual reporting purposes.
Utilizes a variety of instructional materials and available multimedia and technology to enhance learning.
Requests assistance of and works with school and non-school based resource personnel, as needed.
Works in a self-contained, team, departmental, or itinerant capacity as assigned.
Participates in staff development activities and staff meetings as required or assigned.
Ensures continuous communication with parents, both written and oral, to keep them informed of their child’s progress.
Manages allotted learning time to maximize student achievement.
Performs other duties as required.
