Created in 1978 by the New Mexico Legislature, the Department of Cultural Affairs represents New Mexico's dedication to preserving and celebrating the cultural integrity and diversity of our state. The Department oversees a broad range of New Mexico's arts and cultural heritage agencies. These include 15 divisions representing a variety of programs and services.

Reporting to the Marketing & Brand Manager, this position is responsible for generating and editing El Palacio magazine; overseeing the content and development of episodes and seasons of the Department of Cultural Affairs' (DCA) official podcast, Encounter Culture; and reviewing and proofreading marketing and communications materials as assigned. The position is responsible for creating content consistent with the mission of DCA and El Palacio magazine: dedication to preserving and celebrating the cultural integrity and diversity of New Mexico, and to report on the art, culture, and history of the Southwest. This position effectively communicates the stories, exhibitions, public programs, and scholarship of DCA's diverse divisions, including New Mexico State Library, New Mexico Historic Preservation Division, Office of Archeological Studies, New Mexico Arts, New Mexico Museum of Art, Museum of Indian Arts & Culture, Museum of International Folk Art, New Mexico History Museum, New Mexico Museum of Natural History & Science, National Hispanic Cultural Center, New Mexico Museum of Space History, New Mexico Farm & Ranch Heritage Museum, and New Mexico Historic Sites.

How does it get done?

Edit El Palacio Magazine:
  • -Work with Publisher to identify and produce content that aligns with the mission of the magazine and DCA.
  • -Coordinate with division leadership and representatives to obtain relevant assets necessary for producing editorial content.

Assist with design and publishing of El Palacio Magazine:
  • -Collaborate with Publisher, Creative Director, and Advertising Sales Manager to identify and maintain an effective layout.
  • -Ensure magazines are published online and manage social media assets associated with the magazine and its content.

Oversee Encounter Culture podcast:
  • -Identify stories and content for featured podcast episodes and seasons.
  • -Coordinate with division leadership and representatives to obtain relevant assets necessary for producing podcast content.
  • -Work with podcast consultant to edit, produce, and promote podcast.
  • -Host or co-host episodes and seasons as needed.

Edit/review marketing and communications materials:
  • -Edit, proof, and review marketing and communications materials including, but not limited to, advertisements, collateral, social media, news releases, and grant applications as needed.

This position serves Department of Cultural Affairs internal and external stakeholders, including, but not limited to, Department of Cultural Affairs employees, department co-workers and peers, contracted professionals, museum and historic site visitors, magazine subscribers and readers, and podcast listeners.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate has three or more years' experience as a professional editor or writer; copy editing expertise using Chicago Manual of Style, AP Stylebook, and/or MLA Style Manual; and a bachelor's or master's degree with a major in writing.

Minimum Qualification

Bachelor's degree in any field and two (2) years of experience in print media publishing to include writing and/or editing. Substitutions Apply. See Substitution Table below.

Employment Requirements

Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification as a condition of continued employment. Must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico Driver's License.

Working Conditions

State of New Mexico employees may be impacted by the Public Health Order dated December 19, 2022, which requires facilities licensed or certified by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services ("CMS"), including all hospital types, long-term care facilities, nursing homes, hospice facilities and rehabilitation facilities, as well as assisted living facilities and adult day care settings, to adhere to all COVID-related requirements prescribed by CMS, including, but not limited to masking and staff vaccination.

Work is performed in an office setting and requires extensive use of a computer and phone as well as extended hours of sitting.
