Custer County is currently hiring a Dispatcher to provide radio, telephone, and teletype communications between the Custer County Communications Center and law enforcement, fire, and rescue personnel in the field. To receive emergency and non-emergency calls for service and properly dispatch the appropriate agency to handle the call. The dispatcher answers to the Communications Director and the Assistant Director.

Responsibilities:

  • Respond to citizen inquiries and complaints; determine the appropriate response or action required utilizing independent judgment according to established office procedures; follow through with appropriate response.
  • Maintain direct communications by radio equipment with law enforcement officers on patrol; maintain direct radio communications with fire and rescue personnel in the field; dispatch calls with the appropriate personnel.
  • Monitor radio messages; check motor vehicle registrations and drivers license information as requested by law enforcement officers; relay the requested information.
  • Answer multi-line telephone system including 9-1-1 calls. Prioritizing radio and telephone traffic log all incoming calls as to date, time, and subject; take and forward messages and telephone calls to the appropriate person.
  • Maintain filing systems; fill out routine forms and reports.
  • Log all incoming and outgoing radio calls.
  • Coordinate and facilitate information in crisis situations; dispatch the appropriate agency; work and assist the responding agencies as needed.
  • Monitor activities of prisoners and jail personnel by the intercom system.
  • Enter and retrieve data on the teletype and computer systems.
  • Brief incoming dispatcher of activities and information of the previous shift; keep the dispatch area neat and clean

  • Ability to work fluctuating hours and shifts in a harmonious manner with the public, fellow employees, directors, administrators, other agencies and personnel.
  • Ability to accept criticism and or comments from directors, officers, the public or others and maintain a professional composure.
  • Knowledge of all standards, policies and procedures, regulations, and directives governing the operation and management of the Communications Center.
  • Ability to communicate and deal effectively with the citizens and other agencies in a professional manner.
  • Knowledge of office record keeping procedures and various filing systems.
  • Thorough knowledge of the Communications Center equipment and its operation.
  • Skill in the use of all Communications Center equipment.
  • Ability to learn and adapt to new technology, procedural changes or otherwise adjust to the system changes.
  • The ability to organize work, make decisions and function under the stress of daily conditions as well as emergency situations.
  • Ability to maintain the confidentiality of office records and information.
  • Ability to complete and obtain all necessary training, educational certifications and other certifications as required. Ability to keep current and maintain certifications as required including NCIC/NCIS or others. Additional continuing education may be required.

Experience and Training:

  • A high school education or GED is required.
  • Other trainings may be required.

Job Type: Full-time
