General Summary:

Responsible for coordinating the program-wide curriculum; adherence to the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) College and Career Readiness Curriculum; classroom instruction; and diagnostic, educational, and state mandated assessments. In conjunction with the principal or director and the administrative team, ensures that research-based, best practices form the core of instruction in an individually designed, differentiated program that meets the developmental, emotional, and behavioral needs and learning styles of the various student populations. Is responsible for working with other educational leaders within the school to oversee the alignment of state standards and student assessments with the College and Career Readiness Curriculum. Additionally, assists the principal or director to obtain (from the various local school systems) and monitor curriculum, instruction, and assessment to ensure compliance with MSDE learning goals, COMAR regulations, and the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB).


Responsibilities:

I. CUSTOMER RELATIONS

II. DIAGNOSTIC EVALUATION

  • Provides informal and formal individual educational assessments as needed; assists teachers in choosing informal assessments to administer.
  • Functions as NWEA (North West Evaluation Association) test administrator (or other group as appropriate) and assists staff to: interpret results of assessments, use results to develop IEP goals and objectives and for instructional planning, align goals and objectives to the College and Career Readiness Curriculum.

III. INSTRUCTIONAL STAFF DEVELOPMENT - Tracks and monitors the Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) of each student through

  • ensuring staff are trained in differentiated instructions and research-based best practices;
  • supervising and mentoring new teachers in areas of planning, instruction, and assessment,
  • creating a peer review process for observation/facilitation/lesson demonstration; and
  • designing tracking systems to ensure compliance with MSDE, NCLB, and AYP.

IV. CURRICULUM ASSESSMENT

  • Uses extensive knowledge of the College and Career Readiness Curriculum with the results of the testing done through NWEA.
  • Works with curriculum groups to purchase instructional materials in the content areas which best meet the needs of the students.
  • Continually assesses and updates curriculum needs for the program.

V. DIRECT INSTRUCTION

  • Incorporates effective instructional strategies and techniques.
  • Works with selected staff members referred by principal or director to improve their planning and instructional skills

VI. CONSULTATION WITH SCHOOL-WIDE ADMINISTRATIVE TEAM

  • Consults with administrators from other programs to determine appropriate instructional, curriculum, and assessment needs.
  • Supports the process for attaining and implementing the needs of other programs.

VII. SPECIAL PROJECTS

  • Work with local education agencies as well as area schools on special projects as needed.
  • Conducts conferences with parents to discuss the Individual Educational Plan as needed.

Requirements:

  • Must possess a master's degree in special education or master’s equivalency and possess or demonstrate eligibility for (through application within 60 days of employment) Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) certification in specific subject area in secondary education or Special Education at time of appointment and continually during tenure in position. May hold conditional certification in a specialized subject area in secondary education or Special Education at time of appointment.
  • Certification in Educational Supervision and Administration from MSDE is preferred, since the position includes both administrative duties and supervision of staff duties.
  • Work requires one to two years’ experience in: formal and informal assessments; learning disabilities; autism;, staff development in the areas of differentiated instruction, problem and project based learning; teaching and learning for understanding; and constructivism, adult learning, and aligning IEP goals and objectives with the goals and objectives of the College and Career Readiness Curriculum; requires a strong understanding of content, instruction, learning, and assessment across the curriculum and vertically, according to grade level.
  • Work requires a high level of interpersonal skills to interact effectively with staff, students, and administrators, as well as highly developed communication skills, both verbal and written, so as to be able to interpret a broad array of data and present it in a clear and understandable form, and assist others in the application process (up to 80% of work time).
  • Work requires highly developed analytical skills sufficient for data collection, interpretation, and application to the instructional and learning environment of the school.
  • Work requires frequent exposure (up to 50% of work time) to mental strain associated with the need to keep materials highly organized and to attend to details and follow through within stringent time frames.
  • Work requires talking, moderate hearing, mid-range vision and field of vision.
