Tootsie Roll Industries, LLC, a growing candy manufacturer located on the far southwest side of Chicago that has been in the industry for nearly 125 years, has an excellent opportunity for a full time hands on Corporate Safety Manager with at least 10+ years of relevant experience. Reporting to the V. P. of Manufacturing, the Corporate Safety Manager will be responsible for all aspects of the safety program and will be responsible for implementing safety related programs and investigations at our manufacturing locations. The role may require up to 30% travel in North America.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Create and implement workplace health and safety plans and procedures.
  • Evaluate health and safety practice and procedures for risk assessment and following legal guidelines.
  • Inspect equipment and operations for unsafe workplace conditions.
  • Monitor employee conformity to safety laws and policies.
  • Investigate accidents and incidents to find cause and take prevention measures for further incidents.
  • Suggest solutions, improvements and prevention steps for safety issues.
  • Conducts monthly safety meetings, audits, and inspections to ensure compliance, evaluate performance, identify corrective action, and implement follow up assessments.
  • Plans, implements, and conducts preventative care, safety, and compliance training programs.
  • Collaborates with management to develop an Emergency Action Plan and serve as primary contact for injury and incident notification, investigation, and corrective action. Maintains a written log of safety inspection activities, reports, and correspondence.
  • Provides safety related technical support to technical and operation team leaders.
  • Participates in operation team meetings and provides regular safety related updates and communication.
  • Will work closely with Plant Managers, Human Resource Managers and an Occupational Nurse regarding the systems necessary to track and evaluate worker injuries, along with the necessary steps to return workers to limited duty as required and development of job descriptions/analysis as required for ongoing operations.
  • Benchmark and implement leading edge metrics, auditing tools and reporting methods for all US locations

Preferred Skills:

  • Certified in risk management and health/safety management.
  • Thorough knowledge of health and safety laws and guidelines.
  • Extensive attention to detail to distinguish safety hazards.
  • Ability to provide detailed reports and develop safety procedures.
  • Good organizational, leadership and motivation skills.
  • Ability to develop, enhance and maintain administrative policies and procedures.
  • Ability to recognize when safety conditions need improvement.
  • Conflict management and problem-solving skills.
  • Multi-tasking and priority determination ability.
  • Excellent communication, meeting, and presentation skills.
  • Able to coach, develop and influence others without direct supervisory responsibility

Qualifications:

  • BS Degree in Occupational Health, Safety, Engineering or related field required
  • Minimum 7 years in a safety leadership role in an industrial manufacturing environment (food processing or packaging preferred).
  • Progressive responsibility in managing EH&S for a multi-site CPG company.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in regulatory requirements at local, state and federal levels
  • Extensive experience with OSHA regulations and reporting requirements
  • Willingness to travel up to 30%
  • Current certifications in First Aid, CPR and OSHA 30-hour.
