Power Plant Technician
Job Summary
The Martinez Cogen facility is seeking an Operator to fill the Power Plant Technician role. The Power Plant Technician (PPT), “outside operator”, primarily operates installed plant equipment including the gas and steam turbines along with the associated auxiliary plant equipment at the direction of the control room Lead Operator and Day Foreman. Non-exempt position, member of the IBEW local 1245 union with compensation and benefits as per the collective bargaining agreement (CBA) between the union and the company. The Cogen is a 24-7 (24 hrs./day & 7 days/week) operation. The hours of the position is a rotating 12 hour shift per day- 4 days on 4 days off work schedule. This position rotates from days to nights.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Operate installed equipment including turbo generators, cooling tower, heat recovery units, water treatment, and auxiliary equipment such as air compressors, motors, valves, and pumps at the direction of the Lead Operator. (100 MW combined cycle cogeneration power plant supplies power and steam to the associated renewable fuels facility. The plant utilizes two GE Frame 6B gas turbines that feed exhaust gas to Foster Wheeler waste heat boilers to produce 900# steam for use in a GE industrial extraction steam turbine.)
  • Complete daily rounds of plant equipment, read/record meters and gauges or automatic recording devices at specified intervals to verify operating conditions. Record daily shift activities in the operator’s logbook.
  • Visually inspect equipment to detect malfunctions or need for repair, adjustment or lubrication.
  • Maintain equipment by performing preventative maintenance (PM) tasks as assigned including changing pump oil and lubricating equipment as appropriate.
  • Take samples and perform specified tests of plant process and cooling water. Adjust process water properties with chemical additives and/ or adjusts chemical injection pumps rates.
  • Assure that the facility maintains good housekeeping appearances and practices.
  • Monitor the status of all plant systems, controlling routine plant operations, responding to alarms and abnormal conditions by taking appropriate corrective actions, and basic maintenance duties.
  • Execute plant shutdown and start-up procedures as required and assures that the plant meets its generating requirements while operating in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Perform tasks in accordance with Plant Operating and Maintenance procedures and associated vendor and manufacturer technical procedures.
  • Forecast, inventory, and reorder spare parts to maintain plant reliability. Assist in physical inventories.
  • Participate in the administrative maintenance of the plant operating manuals, technical references, prints and diagrams and preventative/predictive maintenance records. Maintain complete equipment files, logs, drawings, and schematics for all designated equipment.
  • Maintain assigned working locations in a neat and orderly condition. Complete other tasks as requested by the Plant Management, as applicable.
Education, Experience and Skills:
Minimum Qualifications
  • Must have a High school diploma or GED.
  • Must have a minimum of 5 years’ of process operations experience in power, refining, chemical, or petrochemical industry .
  • Must be able to physically perform the job which includes working on feet for extensive periods, requiring stair and ladder climbing, and routinely lifting 50 pounds. Must be able to wear protective equipment such as hard hats, safety glasses, respirator, ear protection and other equipment must be worn in the performance of some duties. Work with hazardous materials may be required.
  • Must be able to control the operation of the plant equipment in a safe and efficient manner and be in compliance with all environmental permits and all safety regulations at all times.
  • Must effectively communicate information to supervisory and fellow plant personnel relative to the condition of the plant equipment and performance and provide suggestions for plant improvement.
  • Must be able to work shifts with the possibility of weekend and holiday work as required by schedules, workload and plant conditions. ”Stand By” status will be routinely required.
  • Valid driver’s license required.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Trade school, related military service training programs, or technical training school programs preferred. Additional professional training preferred.
  • 2 or more years' experience as control room/lead operator preferred.
  • 2 or more years' experience in power generation strongly preferred.
Pay Rate is starting at $47.00 an hour.
This position belongs to a family of jobs with increasing responsibility, competency and skill level. Actual position title and pay grade will be based on the selected candidate’s experience and qualifications.
