A DAY IN THE LIFE OF AN ASSOCIATE INSTRUMENTATION TECHNICIAN

As an Associate Instrumentation Technician, you have the important responsibility of assisting with the technical support of our astronomical observatory's electronic, mechanical, and optical systems. On a daily basis, we use these systems to observe our universe, so it is crucial that they operate at their peak. Each day, you feel privileged to work on our cutting-edge instrumentation, including DEIMOS, ESI, HIRES, LRIS, MOSFIRE, NIRSPEC, OSIRIS, KCWI, phasing cameras, star-stacking cameras, and more.

Using a variety of equipment such as liquid cryogens, vacuum pumps, and leak checkers, you troubleshoot our instrumentation and assist with modifications that improve their performance. Sometimes, you fabricate or modify our electronics or electrical assemblies using schematic drawings or other documentation. You also assist with shop maintenance, which includes calibrating equipment, procuring supplies, and ensuring that parts are available when we need them. A team player, you pitch in wherever else you're needed because you're passionate about our mission. You take pride in doing your best every day because you're helping us unravel the mysteries of the universe!


QUALIFICATIONS FOR AN ASSOCIATE INSTRUMENTATION TECHNICIAN

  • Associate degree in a technical field OR equivalent work experience
  • 3+ years of experience with technical or science operations
  • Hands-on experience with electronic or mechanical fabrication
  • Ability to follow standard operating procedures
  • Proficiency with MS Office
  • Valid driver's license and a good driving record

The following qualifications are preferred:

  • Experience in an industrial environment with large machinery
  • Experience working at an astronomical observatory
  • Experience working with complex, sensitive optics and instrumentation
  • Experience working with lasers
