WIC Competent Professional Authority (CPA) Job at Putnam County Hospital

This position is a part-time, non-exempt position. Incumbents can expect to work 18-20 hours per week.


A Competent Professional Authority (CPA) in the WIC clinic is responsible for development and implementation of individual care plans for low-risk clients, and identifying the need for individual care and follow-up with a Qualified Nutritionist.


Principle Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Complete MIS application, certification procedure, and documentation, including height, weight, and hemoglobin
  • Evaluate client's nutritional status through dietary assessment and consultations and make recommendations in relation to nutritional needs, family income, cultural food patterns, home facilities, and modifications in diet
  • Follow guidelines supported by a Participant Centered approach
  • Create and tailor a food prescription using the MIS application that is appropriate to the client's needs
  • Document Assessments, evaluations, counseling, and referrals on the MIS application
  • Provide educational programs for clients in the form of classes or demonstrations and maintain related files and records
  • Provides all pregnant and breastfeeding women with nutrition education opportunities that promote and support breastfeeding
  • Work cooperatively with other staff and community agencies
  • Participate in in-service education and staff meetings
  • Attend conferences and meetings needed or required by the position
  • Make hospital or home visits on special case-by-case basis (home visits are very rare) as needed
  • May be responsible for the Breastfeeding Promotion Program or the supervision of breastfeeding peer counselors
  • May supervise other staff
  • Make referrals as needed
  • Other duties as assigned by WIC Coordinator or Practice Manager

Education and Experience

Must be one of the following:

  • Registered Nurse (RN)
  • Qualified Nutritionist
    • Registered Dietitian
    • Registration eligible to write the exam for the Commission on Dietetic Registration; or
    • Bachelors of Master's Degree in Dietetics; Nutrition Sciences; Public Health Nutrition; Community Nutrition; Clinical Nutrition
  • Bachelors or Master's degree graduate which, through review of an official transcript form an accredited college, includes a study in nutrition. These degrees include but are not limited to:
    • Family and Consumer Sciences
    • Food and Nutrition in Business
    • Nutrition, Fitness, and Health

Experience in maternal and child health or public health setting preferred.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Able to work independently
  • Flexible during periods of change
  • Communicates well, both orally and in writing
  • Able to facilitate discussion with clients
  • Practices professionally in a manner consistent with legal and ethical standards including WIC regulations
  • Able to perform computer related tasks
  • Special literacy and language skills appropriate to address the diversity of the population served by the local agency may be advantageous.
