POSITION SUMMARY: The Web Designer works in a team-oriented environment to design, test, and document the user interfaces for web sites and other digital properties used at Pomona College. The Web Designer coordinates and provides training and support for the College’s content management system (Drupal) and other web-based tools. The position also assists campus departments with general website updates.
Reporting directly to the Director Communications Technology & Strategy, the Web Designer performs and works collaboratively to perform the following essential duties and responsibilities:
  • Design appealing and highly usable web interfaces for the College’s website and other digital properties (e.g. email templates, apps, etc.).
  • Generate website mockups, wireframes, and functional HTML/CSS for review by clients and developers.
  • Assist in gathering feature requirements and identifying use cases.
  • Create appealing media elements such as interactive web components.
  • Support hosted web sites and blogs created by campus authors.
  • Assist in administering the College’s content management systems (e.g. Drupal, Trumba Calendar, WordPress).
  • Assist with general day-to-day web update requests made by the campus community, and manages a customer service email account for such requests.
  • Perform special projects/tasks/duties and provide assistance as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Education: High School Diploma, GED or equivalent combination of education and experience is required. Bachelor’s degree or some college in computer science/web design/user experience is preferred. Any combination of education, training and/or experience equivalent to High School Diploma or GED that provides the required knowledge, skills and ability.
  • Licenses/Certificates: A valid driver’s license is required or equivalent means of reliable transportation to off-site meetings and events.
  • Experience: A minimum of 2 years of progressive experience in web design. Strong troubleshooting and customer service skills are required. Solid organizational abilities, including the ability to juggle multiple assignments and deadlines simultaneously. Experience at an academic institution is preferred.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND CRITICAL SKILLS: This position must possess the knowledge, skills and abilities to be able to successfully perform the essential functions of the job or must be able to demonstrate how the essential functions will be performed (with or without reasonable accommodation) using other knowledge, skills and abilities not listed below.
  • Deploy professional skills in web design, in collaboration with colleagues, to best promote the College’s strategic interests.
    • HTML5, CSS3 & CSS preprocessors (e.g. SASS, LESS), and Javascript (including common libraries like jQuery)
    • Familiar with server side languages (e.g. PHP)
    • Experience with mobile first/responsive design principles and popular frameworks (e.g. Bootstrap, Tailwind, CSS Flexbox)
    • Experience working with popular content management systems (e.g. Drupal, WordPress)
    • Experience with email coding/design best practices
    • Experience with form creation systems (e.g. Formstack, Qualtrics)
    • Familiar with version control systems such as Git or SVN
    • Familiar with web browser compatibility variances
  • Demonstrate effective, accurate and clear communication with excellent/strong verbal, written, interpersonal, reading, phone, and customer service skills. Follow all written and verbal instructions, asking questions as needed for clarification of projects/tasks/duties/assignments.
  • Operate computers proficiently with basic Microsoft Office software (such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) and Adobe Creative Suite software (such as Photoshop, InDesign).
  • Work within accessibility (WCAG) standards.
  • Collaborate with developers, photographers/videographers, designers, and campus clients/partners.
  • Handle all activities and highly confidential information with patience, discretion, good judgment, courtesy and tact while working with people from a wide variety of backgrounds.
  • Use exceptional/strong organizational and time management skills to complete work with accuracy and a keen attention to detail.

ADDITIONAL POSITION DETAILS: Regular, full-time, non-exempt position. The hourly rate for this role is between $29.38 - $33.49 per hour with a competitive benefits package. The specific factors that the College will consider when offering a salary to an individual will include, but not be limited to: education, training, relevant prior experience, and performance in prior role. All staff positions are ineligible for visa or permanent resident card sponsorship. As a California employer, Pomona College requires all employees to be residents of California.
REQUIRED HOURS: The regular hours for this full-time position are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday – Friday, except during the designated summer period when office hours end at 4:30 p.m. Overtime, holiday, weekend and evening work hours may be required. Regular hours may vary due to needs of the College or division.
