Berthoud is building a new Water Department and is looking for operations leadership for water distribution and wastewater collection systems. This position offers a unique opportunity to be a part of the team as it is being created. You will help mold and develop the program rather than just following someone else’s established procedures. Summary: Under limited supervision, oversees the maintenance and operation of the Town’s water distribution system and wastewater collection system. May lead a crew of assigned employees for the execution of such work.

Series Characteristics:

This class is distinguished from the Water Distribution Operator I and II by its responsibility to regularly lead a crew in operations and maintenance tasks or projects involving the Town’s water distribution system and wastewater collection system.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for overseeing work performed on an assigned shift and ensures the safety and quality of the Town’s water deliveries.
  • Maintains, inspects, troubleshoots, reports, and performs maintenance and repair water lines and sanitary sewer lines, valves, hydrants, pumps, storage tanks, water meters, manholes and other assets necessary for the delivery of water to Town customers.
  • Keeps records of work performed.
  • Maintains records on the locations of Town water delivery and wastewater collection assets and performs utility locates within prescribed timelines.
  • May collect and analyze water samples to ensure water quality exceeds minimum standards set by the Town, State, or Federal governments.
  • May assist in developing, monitoring, and implementing asset maintenance plans.
  • Maintains inventory of operational supplies
  • Prepares daily, weekly, and monthly reports of system performance.
  • Provides on the job training and instructs staff in plant maintenance and operation activities and ensures use of proper safety equipment and procedures.
  • Ensures cleanliness of assigned areas and proper storage of equipment and supplies.

Education/Experience:

A High School Diploma or G.E.D., four years of experience in water distribution and wastewater collection.

Knowledge and Abilities:

Knowledge of mathematics, and hydrology; laws and regulations regarding water quality; pumps, valves, motors, filters, backflow prevention devices, piping, and plumbing structures; chemical analysis and testing techniques; and personal computers including spreadsheets, word processing, and Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) and remote water meter reading software.

Ability to lead a crew of assigned employees to efficiently and effectively complete assigned tasks; safely operate a variety of complex tools and equipment; understand, communicate, and carry out oral and written directions; keep accurate records; analyze data; use a variety of tools and equipment; perform heavy manual labor; perform chemical, physical, and biological control analysis, corrosion control, and cross connection control; work independently; work shifts and nights, overtime, and/or on-call duty.

Certificates and Licenses:

A valid Colorado driver’s license with a good driving history. This position may require the incumbent to occasionally use personal equipment (e.g. vehicle, cell phone, tools, etc.) in the course of their employment.

State of Colorado – Class 3 Operator Certification in Water Distribution and Wastewater Collection or ability to obtain within 1 year.
