WORK OBJECTIVE:

Under general supervision, assists with the internal inspection and cleaning of sanitary sewer lines. Work involves routine duties which require knowledge of standard operating, maintenance, and safety procedures of a wastewater system. Work is performed under close supervision with minimal latitude in the use of initiative and independent judgment.

EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Assists with the internal inspection of sewer lines; follows instructions to set up highway safety channel devices; uses maps to locate lines for inspection
  • Assists in cleaning and repairing sanitary sewer lines; operates sewer cleaning equipment, including velocity water jets and high pressure sewer cleaners
  • Assists in inspecting, cleaning and repairing manholes; eliminates obstructions (i.e. roots, grease and other deposits); reports problems to the supervisor
  • Drives a pick-up truck to haul crews, materials and equipment
  • Lays bricks to raise manhole walls to prescribed levels; breaks asphalt and other pavement for excavation; cuts damaged sections of pipes
  • Replaces broken pipes and reconnects pipe sections using a pipe sleeve; inspect joints to ensure tightness,
  • Updates sewer maps and manhole charts
  • Services, adjusts, and makes minor repairs to equipment, machines and attachments
  • Monitors weekly sewer flows; reads meter charts to record flow readings from digital read outs
  • Conducts emergency sewer calls and investigates complaints
  • Responds to Pa One calls on a 24-hour basis; drives to sites and locates lines for contractors
  • Ensures that all areas are clean and free of anything that would constitute a safety hazard
  • Performs all duties in conformance to appropriate safety standards
  • May operate specialized vehicles and/or equipment based on assignment area

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

High school diploma or GED; supplemented by one or more years’ experience with sanitary sewer maintenance and repair work; or an equivalent combination of education, certification, training, and/or experience. Must have a Pennsylvania commercial driver’s license. May be required to have or obtain additional formal industry certification(s).

In addition to meeting the minimum qualifications listed above, an individual must be able to perform each of the established essential functions in order to perform this job successfully.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Basic knowledge of light and medium equipment standard operating procedures
  • Basic knowledge of sanitary sewer line maintenance practices and procedures
  • Basic knowledge of safety and department practices, policies and procedures
  • Basic knowledge of mobile television/seal unit and high pressure sewer cleaner standard operating procedures
  • Skill in the operation of tools and equipment necessary to perform duties
  • Skill in adapting to a changing work environment, competing demands and ability to deal with frequent change, delays or unexpected events
  • Skill in working independently and following through with assignments with minimal supervision
  • Basic ability to operate a computer using Microsoft Office products (Word and Outlook) learn to use applicable department and organization specific software
  • Ability to adhere to safety standards and recognize safety warnings and hazards
  • Ability to perform manual tasks or operate equipment for extended periods of time in possible adverse weather conditions
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective and cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work
  • Ability to regularly attend work and arrive punctually for designated work schedule
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Depending on functional area of assignment, tasks involve the periodic performance of moderately physically demanding work, usually involving lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (up to 50 pounds). Tasks that require moving objects of significant weight require the assistance of another person and/or use of proper techniques and moving equipment. Tasks may involve some climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling.

ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS:

Tasks are regularly performed inside and/or outside with potential for exposure to adverse environmental conditions (e.g., dirt, cold, rain, fumes).

SENSORY REQUIREMENTS:

Tasks require sound and visual perception and discrimination. Tasks require oral communications ability.

Pay: From $24.17 per hour
