About our group:


This position is in the Preamp Development group, which is part of the larger Seagate VLSI organization. The Preamp Development group provides design requirements to preamp vendors who do the actual circuit-level design. The preamp team works closely with the preamp vendors in helping to make design choices and tradeoffs. The Seagate preamp team is responsible for a thorough evaluation of new and prototype parts. With custom silicon for all Seagate products developed by the VLSI team, there is ample opportunity to cross-train and develop new skills by interacting with subject matter experts across multiple functional disciplines.

About the role - you will:


The selected candidate may work on a variety of projects - the main focus will be HDD preamp testing and development of new tests. Testing preamps involves the evaluation of high-speed mixed signal integrated circuits using test automation (Python, MATLAB) and various pieces of test equipment (Oscilloscopes, Multimeters, etc.). New tests must be created and implemented to evaluate the next generation of preamp chips.


Preamp design skills/job activities include:

  • Testing and verification of new preamp designs at a bench level.
  • Development of new tests to ensure the preamp silicon meets the criteria of new features in the preamp design.
  • Aiding in the debugging of preamp designs at bench level and drive level.
  • Demonstrating strong knowledge and interest in high-frequency analog signal and transmission line theory.
  • Building knowledge and understanding of magnetic recording principles and disk drive designs.
  • Supporting preamp vendor interactions during preamp design cycles.
  • Developing requirements for the next-gen features in preamps.

  • Strong communication skills - this is important as you will interface with Seagate product integration teams, head/media organizations, and preamp vendors.
  • Integrate as a team player in a small team of engineers.

Your experience includes:


  • A Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering.
  • Programming knowledge in MATLAB and Python.
  • Possess a strong grasp of fundamental analog principles, magnetic recording principles, and disk drive designs.
  • Familiarity with filter analysis & design
  • Has used common test equipment (oscilloscope, function generator, network analyzer, etc.)



Considered a plus if you also have:


  • A Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering.
  • A strong understanding of high frequency analog signal theory, transmission line theory, signal processing.
  • Mixed mode network analysis (Z, Y & S parameters)
  • Ability to model transmission lines & power planes.
  • Spice circuit modeling experience
  • Experience using simulation tools such as Keysight ADS and Ansys Electronics Desktop.
  • Knowledge in PCB design tools such as Altium and Mentor Graphics Xpedition.

Colorado's 2021 Equal Pay for Equal Work Act (SB 19-085) requires we inform you of the estimated range for this position: $69,000 - $74,000 (Bachelor's Degree) and $$78,000 - $84,000 (Master's Degree) The actual range is based on fair market value of the role in the geography in which you live based on the requirements of the job and your skills. This posted salary range is a good faith and reasonable estimate, and Seagate reserves the right to adjust this range depending on the qualifications of the selected candidate.
