The primary purpose of the Visa and Immigration Advisor is to advise and assist international students, faculty, staff and patients with all matters pertaining to their visa and/or immigration matters and concerns.

Key Functions

1. Will provide professional expertise to international faculty, trainees, staff, volunteers, students, administrators and administrative offices by: •Serves as the Alternative Responsible Officer for J program, Designated School Official for F-1 program; Trainee Program Liaison for J-1 Alien Physician and ECFMG, Designated Hiring Authority for H-1B;
  • Prepares and processes nonimmigrant visa applications for all nonimmigrant categories sponsored by the institution (e.g F-1, E-3, J-1, H-1B, TN) and serves as subject matter expert related to immigration and institutional policies and procedures;
  • Serves as clearing house for non-US citizens seeking or continuing employment with MD Anderson by providing appropriate visa clearances and communicate visa options written and verbally;
  • Process all Form I-9 Employment Verifications for non-US citizens and updates as necessary;
  • Tracks all J-1 & J-2 exchange visitors and F-1 students sponsored by MD Anderson using the Student Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) and our internal database (ISSM);
  • Provides timely written notification to non-US Citizens, Departments, and Administrative Offices regarding passport and visa expiration status;
  • Conducts orientations and educational sessions as necessary; and
  • Manages emergency after business hours pager when assigned and according to departmental emergency pager procedures.

2. Interfaces with Federal, State, and local government agencies (e.g. DHS, USCIS, ICE, CBP, DOS, US Embassies/Consulates, DOL, FBI, IRS, SSA, TXDPS, and UT System): •Serve as the institutional liaison to federal, state, local and international agencies on behalf of the institution;
  • Facilitate and participate in audits conducted by federal, state, and local agencies;
  • Prepare appropriate correspondences regarding delays in visa processing and issuance; and
  • Prepare correspondences to SSA and TXDPS to assist non-US Citizens in obtaining appropriate documentation.

3. Keep abreast of all visa restrictions and changes in federal, state, local and international regulations impacting the sponsorship and/or maintenance of immigration status/sponsorship by: •Reading the Federal Register and other regulatory resources (e.g. Department of Labor, Department of State, Department of Homeland Security, NAFSA, and AILA) ;
  • Participating in numerous webinars; and
  • Attending conferences, workshops, seminars, training, and meetings.

Education
Required: Bachelor's degree in Social Sciences, Business Administration, Humanities or Education'

Experience
Required: Three years of professional experience' May substitute required education degree with additional years of equivalent experience on a one to one basis.

Must be either a U.S. Citizen or a U.S. Lawful Permanent Resident. Federal Code of Regulation - 8 C.F.R. 214.3 (1) (1).

Preferred: Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVIS) experience sponsoring J-1 or F-1 or experience with filing non-immigrant visa petitions (e.g. H-1B, TN)
