General Information

This is skilled work in the maintenance and repair of a variety of vehicular equipment.

Reservations for computers are encouraged. Computers may be reserved in 30 minute time periods. Consecutive 30 minute time periods are also available. Please call (251) 470-7727, extension “0” to make a reservation.


Walk-ins are welcome. However, priority use of the equipment will be given to those with reservations. Computer stations are limited in order to maintain social distancing and will be cleaned at the end of each timed reservation.

While on site, please take precautions to protect yourself and others from Covid-19 by wearing a mask and maintaining social distance as outlined in the Center for Disease Control (CDC) Guidelines.

Please also note that our lobby has limited capacity in order to maintain social distancing. No more than one person may accompany those using the computers and both parties must remain in the individual kiosk area that was reserved.

EXAMINATION: IMPORTANT NOTICE TO APPLICANTS. READ CAREFULLY. No written or oral examination will be required. Applicants will be scored on the basis of an evaluation of their education, training, experience, and personal qualifications as outlined by the candidates' sworn statements in their application, upon corroborative evidence obtained by investigation and the applicants' responses to the job-specific Supplemental Questions. Applicants must provide all background information and supportive documents as requested on the application, supplemental questions and job posting.

Requirements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS : Graduation from a standard senior high school, or the successful completion of the General Educational Development (GED) test, and completion of an apprenticeship or trade school program in automotive or diesel repair, and a minimum of one year's journeyman level experience in maintenance and repair in one of the following areas: (1) automotive/light truck/miscellaneous; (2) medium/heavy truck or (3) construction equipment; or a combination of education and experience equivalent to these requirements.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT : Must possess a commercial driver's license or a valid driver's license from state of residence. All jurisdictions except Mobile County Health Department, must obtain a commercial driver's license with appropriate endorsements, including air brake endorsement, prior to completion of the six month working test period.

ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS OF THE WORK: Good knowledge of gasoline and diesel engines, chassis, electrical wiring, hydraulic systems, welding and body work; good knowledge of the standard practices and tools of the vehicular mechanics trade; good knowledge of the operating principles of gasoline and diesel engines; good knowledge of repair methods used on a variety of light and heavy equipment; ability to diagnose and locate defects in vehicular equipment; ability to repair automotive, light truck, small engine and miscellaneous equipment, medium to heavy trucks (double and triple tandem - Class 3 - 8) or construction equipment; ability to keep records of repair and service operations; ability to make reports; ability to use tools and equipment to maintain and repair vehicular equipment; ability to follow written and oral directions; ability to comprehend technical data; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with superiors and other employees.

EXAMPLES OF WORK: (Any one position may not include all of the duties listed nor do the listed examples include all tasks which may be found in positions of this class.) Analyzes problems with vehicles and equipment to determine repairs needed; overhauls engines; cleans parts to check for wear and damage; repairs hydraulic systems; inspects, adjusts and replaces valves, pistons, main bearing assemblies, ignition, lubrication, cooling, fuel and exhaust systems; adjusts connecting rods and main bearings; repairs or overhauls brake systems, transmissions, differentials, final drives and front and rear axles; inspects and repairs electrical equipment, generators, alternators, distributors, magnetos and starter motors; revamps ignition and lighting systems; operates shop testing equipment; repairs motorcycles, small engines, service engines, tractors and attached implements, draglines, motor patrols, bulldozers, gradeall machines and other equipment; repairs and maintains police and fire vehicles and equipment; test drives vehicles to insure proper operation; does body work, welding and incidental painting; replaces glass; operates tow truck when necessary; repairs equipment in the field as necessary; repairs hydraulic systems; cleans work area; performs related work as required.

Important Information

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK: An employee in this class is responsible for performing journeyman level work in analyzing, diagnosing, evaluating and repairing problems on and in maintaining vehicular, construction and related equipment. Work is performed with considerable room for independent judgment in accordance with established procedures under the direction of a Vehicular/Equipment Mechanic Supervisor in one or more of the following divisions: (1) automotive, light truck, small engine and miscellaneous equipment; (2) medium to heavy trucks (double and triple tandem); (3) construction equipment. Supervision may be exercised over automotive service workers, apprentices or other helpers. A Vehicular/Equipment Mechanic may lift parts weighing fifty pounds.

MEDICAL EXAMINATION: Eligibles selected for appointment must meet the established medical and physical standards for the class of work. The medical examination must be by one of the physicians designated by the Personnel Board. Appointees must bear the cost of the examination.

The Mobile County Personnel Department reserves the right to limit the number of applicants summoned for interview. In such instances, a preliminary appraisal of qualifications, as indicated by the completed application, will be utilized as a guide in the selection of candidates to be summoned.

A “Practice Test Seminar” is held in the Personnel Department Office, 1809 Government Street, Mobile, Alabama, at 9:00 a.m. on the third Wednesday of every month. The purpose of these seminars is to acquaint applicants or interested citizens with design format and procedures utilized by the department in its administration of written test selection devices. Inasmuch as testing facilities are limited, the seminars will be on a first come, first served basis, as long as space remains available.
