The City of Anaheim Public Utilities is seeking an individual who is interested in a career as a Utilities Troubleshooter, working to provide the residents of the City of Anaheim with the most reliable electrical service possible.
The Electric Operations Division is tasked with reliably operating the Anaheim Public Utilities electric system on a "24/7" basis. As such, the Troubleshooter is often the first responder in both emergency and nonemergency situations. Providing exemplary customer service is our goal.

Incumbents in this classification must be journey level line mechanics with advanced knowledge, skills, and experience in the identification of problems with the electric distribution system and service to utility customers.

Essential Functions

The following functions are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed functions and/or may be required to perform additional or different functions from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices.
  • Respond to emergency calls for restoration of interrupted electric service; evaluate emergency action required on site and act to restore service with minimal inconvenience to utilities customers.
  • Work with energized power lines, transformers, and related equipment, in equipment congested areas, from an aerial bucket or a pole, or underground.
  • Use live line tools and high voltage rubber gloving techniques.
  • Perform street light repair and maintenance.
  • De-energize and clear fallen live electric wires from the ground, while protecting property and people.
  • Disconnect and reconnect electric and water service. Confer with customers on service interruption and restoration and power quality issues.
  • Conduct operational inspection of electrical substations.
  • Patrol overhead power lines to detect potential problem areas.
  • Perform television and radio interference inspection.
  • Perform or assist with Substation switching.
  • Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.

Qualifications

  • Candidates must have a minimum of three years of experience minimum as a journey level Electrical Line Mechanic.
  • Candidates must have knowledge of electrical Line Mechanic trade and electrical utility troubleshooting; safety rules and regulations.
  • Candidates must demonstrate the ability to evaluate critical situations and take corrective action in emergency situations; climb and operate equipment; safely utilize rubber gloving techniques on energized equipment; work irregular and extended hours, and communicate effectively with customers.
  • Candidates must be in possession of a valid Class A California Driver’s License in order to drive and operate Troubleshooter bucket trucks and associated equipment.
  • Possession of Rubber Gloving certification must be obtained within six months of appointment. Upon obtaining the certificate, a pay incentive of 6% will be added to the base pay.
  • After completing a High Voltage splicing class provided by the city, a pay incentive of 4% shall be added to the base salary.

Note: This position involves working a weekly shift. The hours rotate among 7:00 am to 3:00 pm; 3:00 pm to 11:00 pm and 11:00 pm to 7:00 am, with most days off during the week and one four day weekend every five weeks. All work periods regularly scheduled to begin at 3:00 pm or later, but before 3:00 am will receive a shift differential.
