JOB SUMMARY

The Tribal Education Liaison provides individual and small group tutoring to students. This position assist students in improving academic achievement by meeting with them on a regular basis to clarify learning problems and work on study skills. Other assistance might include reviewing class material, discussing the text, predicting test questions, formulating ideas for papers, or working on solutions to problems. Tutoring is a supplement to classroom teaching. Tribal Education Liaison are not expected to know everything about the subject for which they tutor. Tribal Education Liaison serves as school liaison establishing partnerships between parents, students, and schools.

1.0 DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

1.1 Tutor identifies participants and utilizes all methods needed to encourage and motivate the learning process of native students.

1.2 Assist with the students individually or in small groups, tutoring, supervising, reinforcing, and/or following up on homework and other school assignments.

1.3 me visitation with students participating in program.

1.4 Maintain appropriate records and evaluate growth of assigned students.

1.5 Assist with home calls and field learning experience trips.

1.6 Make monthly progress reports on assigned students to the parent, and/or TANF Teacher.

1.7 Document and track all program accomplishments.

1.8 Responsible for the documentation of all vital statistics regarding students.

1.10 Work collaboratively with schools, parents and students within respective service area.

1.11 Assist in preparation and mailings regarding program activities and events.

1.12 Provide successful study strategies to their students, even during content-based tutoring.

1.13 Support the student leaning by using a questioning rather than an answering strategy.

1.14 Supports the success of the students by paying close attention to the uniqueness of each student and they are aware of any self-esteem issues for students who are struggling.

1.15 Demonstrate patience with the students and provide appropriate "thinking" time and encouragement.

1.16 Support the learning process by routinely checking their student’s learning by having them summarize information both during and end of learning session.

2.0 GENERAL EXPECTATIONS TO PERFORMANCE

2.1 Responsible for participating in organizational committee, departmental and general meetings

2.2 This includes regular attendance at the Indian Education Program and other relevant meetings.

2.3 Role-models professional behavior for staff.

2.4 Expected to assist in day-to-day when necessary to meet necessary deadlines.

2.5 Responsible for providing assistance to other departments as needed in a prompt, courteous and efficient manner.

2.6 Additional work-related duties as assigned by supervisor. These duties may be given either verbally or in writing.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, LICENSE/CERTIFICATION, & SKILLS

Education

High School Diploma or GED with one (1) year of college.

Experience

Minimum of two (2) years of experience working with students

License/Certification(s)

Active CA Driver’s License.

Skills

· Ability to work with people from diverse cultures, ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds and possess a basic knowledge of Native American communities and always maintain cultural sensitivity. Knowledge of effective learning methodology for elementary and high school level students.

· Knowledge of effective disciplinary practices and techniques.

· Knowledge of utilizing technology for teaching.

· Knowledge of statutory laws relating to minors.

· Knowledge and skill to write appropriate progress notes and evaluations for students.

· Knowledge of relevant and culturally appropriate pedagogy for academic success of Native American students.

· Skill in analyzing problems, projecting consequences, identifying solutions, and implementing recommendations.

· Skill in administering disciplinary rules to students and resolving situational conflicts.

· Skill in supervising and ensuring a safe learning environment for children.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Environmental Conditions

This position typically works in both classroom and office environment with continuous contact with staff and the public. Work areas may be loud. Work both indoors and outdoors but are more likely to work indoors. Some indoor sites may not have air conditioning. Often travel to work sites. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.

Physical Requirements

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit and talk and hear. The employee is occasionally required to walk; use hands to operate, finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls, and reach with hands and arms. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderately quiet.
