Job Summary
Under minimal supervision, installs, maintains and inventories traffic signs and markings within the City of Lakewood. Keeps records on activities performed.

Major Tasks, Duties, and Responsibilities

(This job description does not intend to list every function of the position.)
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Installs traffic control signs.
Prepares or assists in the preparation of equipment for pavement marking and sign installation.
Assists in the layout and painting of parking lots.
Assists in the installation of pavement markings.
Assists in the removal of non-conforming traffic lines with a grinder.
Assists in the sign shop with the sign fabrication/manufacture process.
Assists in proper inventory of materials used.
Completes work logs of materials used, task completed, and crews performing tasks daily.
Maintains inventory of field assets such as signs and markings.
Maintains organized work area.
Drives City vehicle.
Performs pre and post trip inspections on equipment.
Sets up safe work sites including proper use of cones, signs and traffic control.
Works independently and as part of a team; follows supervisor's instructions.
Performs all other duties as assigned.
Must be able to interact with others in a positive manner.
Requires regular and prompt attendance.
Must maintain and utilize City-provided Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) when conducting activities where the employee is exposed to risks above those encountered in a traditional office setting. If injured on-the-job due to failure to utilize PPE a safety violation can be taken.
IMPORTANT FUNCTIONS
Assists signal crews as requested by supervisor.
Uses personal computer to aid in the fabrication/manufacture of traffic control signs when assigned.
ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS
Supervision Received:
Receives supervision ranging from close to general depending on the nature of the task from the Traffic Signs & Markings Supervisor or from the Traffic Signs and Markings Specialist II or III when appropriate.

Essential Qualifications

Education:
High School Diploma or equivalent.
Licensure/Certification/Registration
Valid driver's license and a good driving record.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
IMSA Level I certification in signs and markings.
Experience in performing the basic functions of manufacturing, maintaining and installing traffic signs and in performing traffic line layout and installation of traffic markings.

Post-offer physical exam is required.

Lifting and Carrying:
Must be able to lift and/or move heavy objects such as traffic control barricades, sign blanks, sign poles, markings materials, and other miscellaneous equipment weighing up to 50 pounds; some objects must be lifted chest high and/or placed on the floor.
Pushing and Pulling:
Must be able to push and/or pull a pallet jack with paint totes, bead totes, aluminum sign blanks, sign faces, and other miscellaneous equipment weighing up to 500 pounds. Must be able to assist in pushing and or pulling a pallet jack with above materials weighing up to 2000 pounds.
Body Positions:
Stands, kneels, squats, moves about, climbs stairs and ladders, uses keyboard; drives for extended periods of time. May work at heights up to 30 feet.
Twists, bends and reaches while holding objects.
Pounds nails, rivets, and the like. into concrete, asphalt, wood, aluminum, etc.
Grips and manipulates cans of spray paint as well as a variety of tools daily.
Hearing:
Must be able to hear telephone, radio and audio equipment signals. Paint truck operations require two-way radio communications.
Must be able to hear traffic and warning signals on vehicles.
Vision:
Must have good hand/eye coordination for sign making, sign installation and painting operations.
Uses vision to drive and to notice hazards while working.
MENTAL REQUIREMENTS
Mathematics:
Requires ability to perform simple mathematical calculations to determine quantities of materials used.
Language Ability:
Must be able to communicate effectively among team members and public contacts in the field.
Reasoning:
Must use judgement to determine when to work independently and when to ask for direction.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Performs work outdoors under adverse weather conditions.
Performs work that involves frequent exposure to loud noise and vibrations, smog, dust, machinery, heavy equipment, traffic hazards and heavy traffic.
Work involves high degree of public visibility.
Work involves contact with employees inside and outside the work unit as well as the public.
Performs work that involves exposure to and handling of paint and chemical agents.

Our pension fund is a social security replacement, money purchase plan. Mandatory employee contribution is 11% of gross base salary; city contribution is 13% of gross base salary.

SICK LEAVE
Full-time employees earn 8 hours per month. Part-time employees earn 6 hours per month.

VACATION
Full-time employees with less than five years of service earn 8 hours per month. Part-time employees with less than five years of service earn 6 hours per month.
