TPWD MISSION

To manage and conserve the natural and cultural resources of Texas and to provide hunting, fishing and outdoor recreation opportunities for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Under the direction of the Hatchery Biologist, this position performs routine (journey-level) fish and wildlife conservation work including assisting in propagation, rearing and distribution of fish species. Required to operate a truck and trailer to transport fish. Performs skilled field and maintenance work necessary for the operation of a state fish hatchery. Works under moderate supervision, with minimal latitude for the use of

initiative and independent judgment. Performs additional duties as assigned. Complies with all Agency, Division and Branch rules, regulations and procedures.


Qualifications


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

Graduation from High School or GED.


Experience:

FWT I: No experience required;


FWT II: Four years of relevant experience.


Licensure:

Must possess or be able to obtain, within thirty days of employment, a valid class “C” Texas driver’s license.


NOTE: Retention of position contingent upon obtaining and maintaining required license.


ACCEPTABLE SUBSTITUTIONS

Experience:

FWT II: Graduation from an accredited college or university with a relevant Bachelor’s degree may substitute for two years of the required experience.


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Fisheries Science or related Biological Science.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

FWT I:

Knowledge of aquatic organisms, principles of fish culture;


Knowledge of vehicle and motor mechanics and maintenance;


FWT II:

Knowledge of FWT I, PLUS:


Knowledge of potential environmental contaminants and fish kills;


FWT I:

Skill in using MS Word, Excel and Outlook;


Skill in effective verbal and written communication;


Skill in handling high-pressure situations;


Skill in effective work habits, efficiently completing tasks, and following directions;


Skill in establishing and maintaining effective work relationships with co-workers and work-related contacts;


Skill in the use of hand and power tools, mowers, trimmers, chain saws, tractors, vehicles, generators, farm equipment and other mechanical equipment;


FWT II:

Skill of a FWT I, PLUS:


Skill in designing, maintaining and repairing specialized hatchery equipment;


Skill in collecting and recording and recording environmental and biological data, and maintaining accurate records;


Skills in managing several projects simultaneously;


FWT I:

Ability to identify fish species and common aquatic organisms;


Ability to operate light farm equipment and pull a gooseneck trailer;


Ability to follow special written and verbal instructions;


Ability to perform manual labor including, lifting supplies and materials up to 50 lbs.;


Ability to work under moderate supervision, with limited latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment;


FWT II:

Ability of a FWT I, PLUS:


Ability to identify fish disease and stress;


Ability to work under general supervision, with limited latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.


Ability to conduct work activities in accordance with TPWD safety program.


WORKING CONDITIONS

Temporary full-time position;


Required to work hours other than 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with days off other than Saturday, Sunday and holidays as necessary;


Required to adjust to changing schedules that includes flexible hours with night and weekend hours;


Required to work overtime as necessary;


Required to perform work outdoors, occasionally in adverse weather conditions;


Required to perform manual labor including, lifting supplies and materials up to 50 lbs.;


Required to operate a State vehicle;


Required travel 10% with possible overnight stays;


Non-smoking environment in State buildings and vehicles.
