Tooling Engineer

The Manufacturing Technical Services (MTS) group is responsible for developing and transferring cutting edge manufacturing processes as part of the company’s manufacturing footprint strategy and bring these processes to fruition. MTS is also a key component of advancing AWP manufacturing capability. This includes automation, digital transformation, robotics, and AGV’s.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for designing and overseeing the construction of work holding for welding and machining procedures.
  • Works closely with teams across the globe to develop, validate and document tooling and supporting processes for manufacturing.
  • Develop work holdings to integrate with automated manufacturing processes including robotics.
  • Key contributor in New Product Design process to ensure manufacturability, quality, and safety
  • Participates in the installation and sequencing of machines, workstations, tools, and supplies to optimize the efficiency of the manufacturing process.
  • Develops and or duplicates manufacturing tooling and equipment based on engineering designs
  • Performs quality checks and measurements to validate tools and fixtures
  • Prepares documentation for training and operation as well as maintenance manuals for equipment that is developed.
  • Studies manufacturing methods, utilizing knowledge of product design, assembly, and weld processes
  • Gathers and analyzes process information including cycle times, measurements, test results, trends, etc., used for statistical process control, cost analysis, and planning.
  • Researches and analyzes design proposals for ability to manufacture on a basis that minimizes waste and cost. Suggests design modifications to facilitate production.
  • Applies statistical measures to estimate future manufacturing requirements.
  • Researches and recommends work holding and tool design methods to ensure consistent quality for the manufacturing teams.
  • Participates with Design Engineers to discuss and evaluate new product design or re-design and manufacture.
  • Performs other duties as assigned that support the overall objective of the position.

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (BS in Mechanical, Manufacturing Engineering Technology, Electrical, Industrial, Civil or Aeronautical) that is ABET accredited.
  • Prior experience designing tooling or equipment. Working knowledge of how to properly hold and locate parts for a weld process. Working knowledge of basic machine design and power systems.
  • Comfortable working in a high speed production environment
  • Working knowledge of basic office programs (Excel, Project, Word, Etc)
  • Working knowledge of Solidworks, Autocad or equivalent CAD programs.
  • Understanding of GD&T

Preferred Qualifications

  • Specialized professional knowledge of the theory, principles, and practices of mechanical or industrial engineering and machine design.
  • Working knowledge of CMM or other precision measuring tools and software
  • Understanding of GD&T
  • Basic project planning experience and the ability to convert designs into project action plans.
  • Sufficient human relations skill to convey technical engineering concepts to others; and technical employees; and to work cooperatively with internal and external customers.
  • Technical writing skills sufficient to prepare product specifications, test, and process documentation.
  • Hands on experience with CNC equipment such as Lathes and Mills preferred (Programming, Optimizing, troubleshooting, etc.)
  • Ability to read mechanical and electrical schematics, blueprints.
  • Ability to learn and perform within the principles of Lean Manufacturing, Just-in-Time, and Total Quality Management.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $85,000.00 - $100,000.00 per year
