Responsibilities include organization and direct facilitation of testing systems and accessibility services provided to students. Assist SCC’s testing and accessibility operations through product and best practices research, process refinement, direct coordination and proctoring of tests, intake and review of individual student learning challenges (ADA defined disabilities, IEP plans, medical professional diagnoses, etc.), and make recommendations for learning accommodation needs. Ethical, compassionate, energetic and positive demeanor is essential in this direct-service role that involves consistent demonstration of well-refined customer service and interpersonal skills.

This position is a half-time Professional Services position (1,044 hours per year).

Starting salary for the position is $19,000.00 annually.
Pro-rated benefits include single ($1000 deductible) medical, dental & vision insurance, $50,000 life insurance, long-term disability, paid sick leave, 15 days vacation per year, paid holiday and spring breaks and participation in IPERS or TIAA retirement plan.

The Testing and Accessibility Services Specialist will abide by the employment contract and relevant policies and guidelines of the Board of Trustees.

Essential Duties Summary
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Learn and embrace the comprehensive community college philosophy and related Iowa Code regulations.
  • Learn, apply, and role-model all SCC policies and procedures, including but not limited to the strategic goals and expectations of accountability within the Student Services Division.
  • Acquire familiarity and certification with all tests administered by SCC’s testing center and assist with test administration as needed, including but not limited to:
  • NEXTGen Accuplacer
  • NEXTGen Accuplacer ESL
  • ALEKS
  • CNA
  • proctor virtual testing sessions
  • make-up tests
  • various other certification/national examinations
  • distance learning examinations for other colleges and universities
  • Assist with management and maintenance of correspondence between faculty (internal and other schools’), other stakeholders (CNA, State Pesticide Certifications, HS’s, etc.) and the testing center to appropriately schedule and secure materials to facilitate testing operations.
  • Provide coordination and facilitation of group testing events to assist recruitment efforts.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality, security, and integrity of all student records, tests, and testing procedures.
  • Assist with the updating and regular maintenance of Testing Center and Accessibility Services documents, manuals, handbooks and web pages in collaboration with department colleagues.
  • Develop and maintain a firm understanding of ADA and Section 504 regulations.
  • Distribute and inform students and families about accessibility accommodations; collect, disseminate and maintain appropriate documentation materials.
  • Assist ADA staff in the coordination of faculty and staff training on matters of classroom management and accommodations for students with disabilities, and section 504 & ADA regulations
  • Gather and maintain up-to-date researched information on effective services/best practices at other institutions, and in the community for students with disabilities
  • Assist with programming efforts on campus to increase awareness of disabilities among students and staff to cultivate a campus climate of inclusion.
  • Maintain inventory of assistive technology equipment and arranges for servicing of equipment as needed.
  • Participate in college recruitment events to provide information on accessibility services available to students
  • Maintain awareness of best practices for students with disabilities in higher education.
  • Research and recommend the use of new assistive technology equipment and resources as they develop.
  • Apply ethical standards to work situations; make work decisions in accordance with SCC’s values and goals; show respect and sensitivity for cultural differences, and promote a harassment-free environment.
  • Embrace and support constructive change; work efficiently and effectively to improve college operations.
  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with students, colleagues within and outside the Center, and contribute toward building a positive team working environment; treat others with respect as a representative of SCC.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications
Qualifications and Experience:

  • Education:

o Bachelor’s degree required. Majors in psychology, social work, vocational education, counseling, student development or similar fields preferred.

  • Experience:
  • Experience in interpreting and understanding ADA, and Section 504 federal requirements preferred.
  • Minimum two years related experience within an educational or social services setting required.
  • Experience with testing software and systems preferred.
  • Demonstrated success in working with confidential information required
  • Excellent interpersonal (reading, writing, speaking, listening) skills are required.
  • Competency with computer software applications specifically Google Office Suite and Microsoft Office programs with proficiency in Word, Excel, and Outlook; ability to learn and develop competency in SCC’s administrative software (Ellucian) and various other software programs as needed.
  • Technology savvy with critical thinking skills to troubleshoot technical issues.

  • Work independently and be a self-starter, including conducting research of best practices relevant to routine responsibilities and assigned tasks.

  • Ability to work in a strong service environment that is subject to changing priorities.

Preferred Qualifications

Physical Demands
The Testing and Accessibility Services Specialist must have the ability and mobility to coordinate and deliver services to both campuses and centers in respect to specific caseload assignment; travel to other areas within the state, nationally, regionally, and throughout the college district required. Must be able to work on a basis of “available as work demands” in addition to a fixed schedule, which will include evenings and weekends. In addition, the individual in this position will actively promote a positive image for the college district.
